Aviation Frequencies & Radio Signal Bands

1. Radio Frequency Bands & Their Uses

- ELF (Extremely Low Frequency): < 3 kHz -> Submarine communication
- VLF (Very Low Frequency): 3 - 30 kHz -> NDB (Non-Directional Beacon)
- LF (Low Frequency): 30 - 300 kHz -> NDB, LORAN-C
- MF (Medium Frequency): 300 - 3000 kHz (0.3 - 3 MHz) -> AM radio, NDB
- HF (High Frequency): 3 - 30 MHz -> Long-range communication, HF radio
- VHF (Very High Frequency): 30 - 300 MHz -> ATC, ILS (Localizer), VOR, DME, Communication
- UHF (Ultra High Frequency): 300 - 3000 MHz (0.3 - 3 GHz) -> ILS (Glideslope), DME, GPS, ATC
Radar
- SHF (Super High Frequency): 3 - 30 GHz -> Weather Radar, Radio Altimeter, SATCOM
- EHF (Extremely High Frequency): 30 - 300 GHz -> Experimental, future aviation systems

2. Aviation Navigation & Instrumentation Frequencies

- Radio Altimeter: 4.2 - 4.4 GHz -> SHF (Centimetric Waves)
- NDB (Non-Directional Beacon): 190 - 1750 kHz -> LF & MF
- ILS Localizer: 108.1 - 111.95 MHz -> VHF
- ILS Glideslope: 329.15 - 335 MHz -> UHF
- VOR (VHF Omnidirectional Range): 108.00 - 117.95 MHz -> VHF
- DME (Distance Measuring Equipment): 962 - 1213 MHz -> UHF
- GPS: 1575.42 MHz (L1), 1227.60 MHz (L2) -> UHF

3. Wave Types Used in Aviation

- Radio Altimeter: Centimetric Waves (SHF)
- ATC Primary Radar: Decimetric Waves (UHF)
- Weather Radar: Centimetric Waves (SHF)
- ILS Localizer: VHF Waves
- ILS Glideslope: UHF Waves
- DME: UHF Waves
- GPS: UHF Waves

4. Tricks to Remember Frequencies

1. ILS Localizer = VHF (Starts with 'L' like VLF)
2. ILS Glideslope = UHF (Higher than Localizer)
3. NDB = LF/MF (Oldest system, so lowest frequency)
4. DME = UHF (Because it needs fast response)
5. Radio Altimeter = SHF (Centimetric, needs high precision)
