10 Fluids Solution
10 Fluids Solution
Problem set 10
1) You are building a raft to cross a river. The area of the raft is 80m2 and its
thickness is 20 cm. The density of the wood is 0.6 g/cm3. To swim on the river
2 cm of the raft need to be above the water surface. What mass can you transport
with the raft?
2) Assume that the area on the “output” side lifting the car is 100 times greater than the area of the piston
you press in. What force do you need to apply on the input
side to lift a car of 1000 kg. Can you do this by hand? (To
answer the second question compare the force needed to
the force you need to lift an object of a certain mass in the
gravitational field on Earth)
3) Heating duct to a room. What area must a heating duct have if air moving
3.0 m/s along it can replenish the air every 15 minutes in a room of volume
300 m3? Assume the air’s density remains constant.
