Dear Friends,
As we close the curtain on Northern Plains
Dance’s 28th season, my heart is full. Tonight,
we return to the stage at the Belle Mehus with
Cinderella—a production filled with magic,
meaning, and memories. I’m so grateful you’re here
with us to share in it.
Back in 2020, we began dreaming of Cinderella.
Dancers auditioned, rehearsals began, and
excitement filled our halls. But as we all know, the
world had other plans. That dream was put on
hold—until now. Five years later, that dream is alive
again, more radiant and resilient than ever.
This story of love, kindness, and forgiveness has stood the test of time. Sergei
Prokofiev’s gorgeous score brings humor and whimsy to every step, and our
dancers have poured their hearts into every movement. They’ve taken this
beloved fairy tale and turned it into something truly special for you tonight.
Each year, we bring four major productions to the stage, including holiday
favorites like The Nutcracker. We’re thrilled to share a sneak peek of our
upcoming 2025–26 season, featuring a brand-new take on The Wizard of Oz.
We’d love for you to become a subscriber—it’s the best way to experience all the
beauty and creativity we have in store.
It’s an honor to lead this company and to witness the joy, dedication, and
talent that fuel it. Please explore our website to discover more of what’s ahead,
including Relevé on the Rooftop and Dance+, two events that promise to
surprise and delight.
Finally, a heartfelt thank you to our incredible donors, volunteers, staff, and board
members. Your generosity and belief in the power of dance make performances
like this possible.
On behalf of all of us at Northern Plains Dance—thank you for being part of the
magic. Enjoy Cinderella.
With gratitude,

director
Hollis Mackintosh Heid began her training with Delia Foley, A.R.A.D. at Ballet
Arts in Clarks Mills, NY. She attended Butler University, graduating in 2002 with a
BFA in Dance Performance and Arts Administration. She danced professionally with
The Chamber Dance Project, Louisville Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, Augusta Ballet and
Northern Plains Ballet, dancing roles in works by Fredrick Franklin, Lars Lubovitch,
Peter Powlus, Merce Cunningham, Andre Prokovsky, Val Caniparoli, Ron Cunningham,
and George Balanchine. As Director of Northern Plains Dance, she has choreographed
9 original pieces for Choreographers’ Showcase and Dance+, restaged Act II of
Paquita, Swan Lake, and Giselle, and directed 20 performances of The Nutcracker and
13 original full-length fairy tale productions. Her focus as Director has been expanding
the organization’s reach into the community through the development of various
outreach programs, partnering with local arts and service organizations, and through
her artistic contributions, bringing NPD to the forefront of the state for innovative arts
programming.

Synopsis
Once upon a time…
In a quiet corner of the kingdom lived a kind-hearted girl named Ella.
After her father passed away, she was left in the care of her cold and
selfish Stepmother and two vain Stepsisters, Lucinda and Florinda. They
teased her endlessly for the ashes on her clothes from sleeping by the
fire, cruelly calling her Cinderella. But even through hardship, Cinderella
held tight to her dreams.

Act I
Lucinda and Florinda bicker and preen, fussing over embroidery as
Cinderella quietly scrubs the floor nearby. A quarrel erupts—as it always
does—and when Cinderella tries to help, they lash out. Ordered to clean,
she turns her chores into a little dance, finding small joy in movement and
rhythm.

Later, while Cinderella dozes, a scurry of white mice and colorful

chameleons tumble into the kitchen, startling the Stepsisters. Cinderella
gently helps the creatures outside, just as royal messengers arrive with
astonishing news: the Prince is holding a grand Ball to find his bride, and
every young maiden in the kingdom is invited.
The house is thrown into chaos. The Stepmother is thrilled, and the
Stepsisters demand the finest gowns and attention. In the midst of the
frenzy, a ragged old beggar woman appears at the door. Cinderella
offers her food and shoes, not knowing her simple kindness will soon be
returned tenfold.

As the household prepares for the Ball—with tailors, merchants, and a

flustered dancing master arriving—Cinderella is left behind. Alone, she
dreams of dancing by candlelight, pretending her broom is a dashing
partner. But when her longing becomes too much to bear, she flees to the
garden in tears.

There, the beggar woman reappears—and transforms into a radiant

Fairy Godmother. Summoning the Fairies of Spring, Summer, Autumn,
and Winter, she prepares Cinderella for the Ball, draping her in beauty
and magic. A pumpkin becomes a glittering carriage, the mice and
chameleons turn into horses and coachmen, and Cinderella is swept away
into the night—escorted by the Seasons and Night Fairies. But there is
one rule: she must return before midnight.

Act II
The palace is alive with music and merriment. Courtiers twirl, jesters
tumble, and noble guests fill the grand hall. The Prince arrives to great
fanfare, while Lucinda and Florinda clumsily push their way to the center
of attention.

Suddenly, the music softens, and a mysterious princess appears—

Cinderella, transformed. Her beauty is dazzling, and no one, not even
her Stepmother or Stepsisters, recognizes her. The Prince is immediately
captivated. As they dance, guests are served rare and precious oranges.
When one Stepsister is left without, Cinderella quietly gives up her own.
Even in disguise, her kindness shines through.

Cinderella and the Prince share a moment of magic, declaring their love
beneath the chandeliers. But all too soon, the clock begins to strike
twelve. Cinderella flees, vanishing into the night—leaving behind only a
single, shimmering slipper.

The Prince vows to find his love, no matter how far he must travel.
Cinderella awakens by the hearth, her heart full and her apron pocket
heavier—inside, the second glass slipper. It hadn’t been a dream.
News spreads: the Prince is searching the kingdom, trying the lost slipper
on every maiden’s foot. The Stepsisters shove and squabble, desperate
for it to fit, but their efforts are in vain.

Quietly, Cinderella steps forward. She produces the second slipper—and

everything falls into place. The Prince recognizes her at once.
With love found and dreams fulfilled, Cinderella and the Prince begin
their happily ever after.
