India is a land of festivals with every State having a unique culture and
festival. There is unity in diversity. Different festivals bring in a lot of joy
and celebration.

1. Diwali
● Diwali is called the Festival of lights
● Most prominent of Hindu Festivals
● People light clay lamps, lights,
decorate the house with rangolis

2. Ganesh Puja
● Ganesh Chaturthi also
known as Vinayaka
Chaturthi, is a Hindu festival.
● The festival celebrates Lord
Ganesh as the God of New
Beginnings..
● The Festival is celebrated
throughout India, especially
in the state of Maharashtra.
3. Holi
● Holi is a very popular Hindu
festival also known as the
Festival of Colours
● Holi festival marks the arrival
of spring season and the
end of winter season
● People play with colours and
celebrate by distributing
traditional Indian sweets like
Gujiyas.

4. Onam
● Onam is a harvest festival
celebrated mainly by
Malayali people in Kerala.
● According to legends, the
festival is celebrated to
commemorate King
Mahabali, whose spirit is
said to visit Kerala at the
time of Onam
● Onam celebrations include
boat races and tiger dances.
5. Janmashtmi
● Janmashtami or
Gokulashtami, is a major
Hindu festival that
celebrates the birth of
Krishna, the eighth avatar of
Vishnu.
● Lord Krishna was born at
Mathura in U.P, where it is
celebrated as a royal
festival.
● The festival is celebrated by
observing fasts and enacting
dance drama events called
Krishna Lila

6. Raksha Bandhan
● On Raksha Bandhan, a
sister ties a Rakhi around
the wrist of herr brother,
symbolically protecting them
and receiving gifts in return
● The tying of rakhi also
inculcates the responsibility
of care and love in the
brothers towards their
sisters.
7. Rath Yatra
● Ratha Yatra is a major Oriya
festival.
● On Rath Yatra, the Chariots
of Lord Jagannath, Lord
Balabhadra and their sister
Subhadra are pulled by
devotees.
● The Rath Yatra of Puri,
Orissa is very famous.

8. Dussera
● Vijayadashmi or Dussera is
celebrated every year to
remember God Ram’s
victory over Ravan, the
demon.
● The festival is celebrated by
burning of effigies of Ravan
and his brothers
● The festival symbolises the
victory of good over evil.
