LESSON 3. What happened?


Warm up
RIDDLE
As I was going to St. Ives I met a man with seven wives. Each wife had seven sacks,
each sack had seven cats and each cat had seven kits. Kits, cats, sacks and wives.
How many were going to St. Ives?
In our class you will reinforce some communicative function by asking for and
giving information about some action in past.
Listen the following minidialogue after that answer the questions and pay
attention to the forms used to ask for and give information in the past.
 How was Richard´s weekend?
 What did he do?
 When did Richard´s parents move to Trinidad
 How was Tom´s weekend?
Mini dialog 1
Two friends meet at the office on Monday morning and talk about the weekend.
Richard: Hi, Tom!
Tom: Hi, Richard. How was your weekend?
Richard: It was fine. I went to visit my parents in Trinidad
Tom: Really? Do your parents live in Trinidad?
Richard: Yes. They moved to Trinidad three years ago. How about you? How was
your weekend? Where did you go?
Tom: Well, my weekend was not bad …
Now listen what Tom did on weekend, answer questions
 How was Tom weekend?
 Did he stay home?
 What did he do on weekend?
 Where did he go with his children in the morning?

Tom’s story
Tom tells Richard about his weekend.
Well, my weekend was not bad. I stayed home because my wife went to an
International Conference in Mexico City. On Saturday, I got up early in the morning,
made the beds, prepared breakfast for the children, and took them to the park. The
kids played volleyball all morning. Then, we went back home for lunch, and watched
TV all afternoon.
What tense are the verbs in? In past
When is simple past used? It´s used when we need to ask for and give information
about some actions or events in the past.

ASKING FOR AND GIVING INFORMATION ABOUT ACTIONS IN THE PAST

How was your weekend? It was fine.

Where did you go? I went to Trinidad. My parents moved


to Trinidad.

EXPLANATION OF THE SIMPLE PAST TENSE.

Verb TO BE

Simple present. amI I am not

is she, he, it isn´t

areyou, they, we aren´t

Simple past: was she, he, I was not – wasn´t Was Beatriz in class on Saturday? Yes, she was

Were you, they, we were not – weren´t Were they at school on Sunday? No, they weren´t

Kate’s secretary was sick yesterday.

Kate wasn´t a good student at the university.

Were you at the concert last night? Yes, I was or No, I wasn´t

Observe the following sentence:

I prepared breakfast this morning

Which is the verb? What tense is it? Is it regular or irregular verb? How do you know
it?

Regular verbs are those verbs, that is added –d or –ed

a) The verbs that finish in –e are only added (-d) prepare  d  prepared, love  d 
loved

b) The majority of the regular verbs are added (-ed) walk  ed  walked

c) The regular verbs of one syllable that finish in one vowel preceded by a
consonant, it doubles the final consonant and add-ed

stop  ed  stopped

plan  ed  planned
d) In other cases when the verbs have two syllables the stress (acentuação)
occurred in the second syllable we double the consonant

e.g prefer  ed  preffered, admit  ed admitted

e) The verbs ending in a consonant plus –Y, change the –y to – i and add –ed

e.g study – studied.

IRREGULAR VERBS HAVE differences in simple present and simple past.

Past time has the same form for all the persons.

Kate´s mother goes to the museum She went to the museum

They have a wonderful day They had a wonderful day

He never comes late for work He came late for work

NEGATIVE STATEMENT IS USED DID PLUS NOT – DIDN´T

Kate´s mother doesn´t go to the museum She didn´t go to the museum

They don´t have a wonderful day They didn´t have a wonderful day

He never doesn´t come late for work He didn´t come late for work

INTERROGATIVE STATEMENT

Did you go to the university yesterday? Yes, they did or no, they didn´t
Did she visit her mother on weekend? Yes, she did or No, she didn´t.
Expressions of time used in past are: Yesterday  morning, afternoon; the day
before yesterday, last nigth  week, day; ago, a week ago,/ months ago /years
ago.

EXERCISES
Exercise 1. Work in pairs. Student A went to another province during his/ her last
summer vacation. Student B asks questions to find out.
 where he/she went.
 how he/she got there.
 what places he/she visited.
Exercise 2. Complete the dialog with the correct past tense form of the verb be
Where were Lucy and Betty last night?
A: Where _______ you last night? I called you twice, but you didn’t
answer the phone.

Exercise 3. Underline the correct form of the verbs in parentheses

just (drink-drinks-drank) a glass of orange juice.
2. Alberto (cook-cooks-cooked) dinner yesterday because his wife (was-were) sick.
3. Susana (don’t-doesn’t-didn’t) watch TV at night, but last night she (watch-watches -
watched) a very interesting program about robotics.
4. Julia and Ralph never (go-goes-went) to school by bus. Yesterday, they (was-were)
so tired, they (take- takes- took) the bus.
5. Lorna (don’t- doesn’t- didn’t) enjoy the trip to Soroa last weekend. Her best friend
(don’t-doesn’t - didn’t) go with her; she (forget- forgets-forgot) her bathing suit, and it
(rain-rains-rained) all afternoon.
Exercise 4. Complete the sentences with the verbs in the list
(read- woke up- broke-fell- went-lent- watched-was- were- heard- wanted-opened-
didn’t see- drank- got up).
What happened to Carlos?
T: Why are you late, Carlos? What happened? You look terrible!
C: Oh! Miss. Suárez, let me explain to you what happened to me last night.

I remember when my father took this photo, I was seven. I was thin and had fair hair. I

got home early. I was a healthy child, so I was rarely absent from school. I was good at
math and sports. I was such a fast runner, that my friends called me bullet or arrow. In
summertime, I went to visit my grandparents in the countryside. There I was free as a
bird: I rode on horseback. I swam in the river. I went hiking and drove my grandfather’s
truck. I really enjoyed my childhood!”

3. Did he sometimes absent from school?
