The permissible current rating of cable shall be calculated in accordance with the
requirements of relevant parts of IEC 60287 and the recommendations of Manufacturer.
The various factors that influence the cable design, while calculating the permissible
current rating includes, but not limited to the following:
a) Ambient temperature.

be as specified in the Project Documents.
b) Thermal resistivity of the medium (air / soil) in which the cable is installed.
The value of soil thermal resistivity shall be as per the Soil Resistivity Report for
the project under consideration. However, the minimum Soil Resistivity value for
design purpose shall not be less than two (2) K.m / W (Kelvin metre per watt).
Where cables of different types, sizes are laid in groups, the current carrying
capacity of cable shall be derated, taking into consideration of the thermal effects
of cables in the group depending upon the type of installation and the clearance
maintained between cables.
a) The short time current carrying capacity of the cables shall take into account the
current-time characteristics of the circuit protection device to ensure that the cables
do not suffer damage due to overheating under fault conditions. The short-circuit
current withstand time (t) of the cable shall be suitably selected such that the
maximum allowable thermal stress on the cable (I2t) shall be higher than the
maximum “let-through” energy by the protective device to which the cable is
connected.
Note: The power cables connected to Circuit Breaker Feeders shall be designed
for short-circuit current capacity of one (1) second, unless otherwise
specified / approved by KOC.
a) Cables shall be sized so that the maximum voltage drop between the supply
source and the load, when carrying the design current, does not exceed the value
that will ensure safe and efficient operation of the associated apparatus or the
following, whichever is lower:
(i) For HV motors, the voltage drop at the motor terminals shall not exceed
3 % at full load current and 15 % during starting.
(ii) For LV motors, the voltage drop at the motor terminals shall not exceed
5 % at full load current and 15 % during starting.

additions. The maximum limits specified below have to be used judiciously by the
designer where transmission of bulk power over a long distance is considered at
11 kV, provided all other design criteria could be met:
Note: The above voltage drop limits shall also apply for similar applications where
high voltage feeders upto 11 kV are employed.
The overcurrent protection device shall be set not to exceed the current carrying capacity
of the selected cables under the installed conditions.
The minimum conductor sizes for cables shall be calculated based on the requirements
mentioned in this RP or based on the following, whichever is larger:
