Assignment Brief and Guidance:

CRP/2024/25/AI
Research Theme: Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence is at the forefront of innovation within Computer Science that uses a
combination of logic, algorithms and large data sets to produce an AI model. The AI model is created
to perform specific tasks or make predictions on supplied sets of input data, for example identifying
patterns in weather data, internet search data or analysis of medical data. Artificial intelligence is
predicted to generate a potential impact to the global economy of $13 – $15 Trillion by 2030, with
sales of AI related hardware, software and services predicted to see a global revenue of $900 billion.
It is predicted that AI will boost the GDP of China by a little over 26% by 2039, and of North America
by 14.5%. AI requires the input of structured and labelled data, where the outputs are already
known. The input data sets to the AI model are intrinsically linked to study field to which the AI
engine is to be applied. The AI model can then be used to identify and recognise patterns and
relationships within the input data. This identification step is referred to as ‘training’ the AI model.
Once this training is completed, the model can then be used to make predictions and identify
patterns within brand new data sets. This new data set can then be added to the existing data set,
so that the AI model keeps ‘growing’. As the model data set keeps expanding, and the AI algorithms
are modified and refined, this gives the impression that the AI is ‘learning’ and demonstrating
‘intelligence’. AI has been used extensively to analyse and process large and complex datasets
produced by big data systems, often in real time and using Computer Vision to extract data from
image sources.

Developing Artificial Intelligence required a range of knowledge and skills across a broad range of
computer science disciplines. AI developers need to be familiar with the algorithms and techniques
in fields such as machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision and data science.
Knowing the required computing skills will help organisations recruit the correct resources to help
develop and extend AI systems. Artificial Intelligence has a range of benefits across many industry
sectors. In the finance industry, AI is rapidly becoming a game changer, using advanced algorithms,
models and machine learning to carry out predictive analytics on large, rapidly changing financial
datasets to provide more accurate financial predictions. In the field of business operations, AI
automation is helping to support and enhance labour. productivity, leading to greater cost savings
and increased efficiency. AI is also revolutionising the way businesses interact with their customers,
by providing AI driven expert systems to help customers resolve queries as well as providing
personalised recommendations based on customer choices and preferences. In the field of
biomedical science, AI models help in the development of new drug treatments for a range of

CRP/2024/25/AI
diseases by searching and processing large scale medical and DNA datasets.

While Artificial Intelligence has numerous benefits in the analysis and processing of large data sets
to solve problems, there are some clear risks to the application technology. AI systems respond to
the data fed into the model, and so if this data is not representative of the problem area under
study, there is a likelihood that the output of the AI model will be biased. In addition, there are
security and privacy concerns on the source and storage of the large datasets used for AI. The rise of
the Deepfake image and the manipulation of the human voice is also a concern because of the
spread of misinformation. The wide-ranging effects of these risks mean that they can only be dealt
with by a diverse range of stakeholders, including computer scientists, law makers, governments,
and industry leaders. There are also incidental risks of AI in business, for example the increasing
adoption of AI based systems may increase unemployment across a range of sectors and workforce
demographics.
(Pearson, 2024)

Task
You have been given the task of conducting research related to artificial Intelligence and its impact

INTRODUCTION

1.1. Introduction

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has rapidly become a important technology in many different
industries, changing businesses functions, make decisions, and interact with customers. AI
models are rapidly being used for jobs that were previously only left for humans, such automated
Hiring system, financial predictions, and healthcare diagnostics but, issues over fairness,
transparency, and ethical implications have significantly increased as these system become more
ingrained in daily decision making.

Algorithmic bias, in which AI models act unfairly or generate incorrect outcomes as the results
of biased training data or poor design, is an important issue facing the creation and application
of Artificial intelligence. Particularly when used in sensitive fields like criminal justice,
employment, financing, and identification of faces, these biases can have serious repercussions.
Unfair results and lead to ethical and legal issues for companies, reduce public trust, and improve
Already-existing gaps in society.

This project aims to study how much bias effects AI system, analyse current mitigation
techniques, and determine how fairness may be verified knowing and solving these issues is
necessary for both ethical AI development and ensuring that AI system helps everyone equally.
The aim of the project is to find practical ideas and solution to encourage fair, open, and
responsible AI

1.2. Purpose of research

The purpose of the research is to study the implications of bias in AI algorithms and to explore
tactics that advance fairness in AI system. Making sure the system operate fairness and without
bias has become important because of AI grows to effect decision-making in important
companies like healthcare, banking, criminal justice, and hiring.
ii

The research aims to:

 Analyze algorithmic bias’s main casus, such as imbalanced learning data and model
design errors
 Analyze the efficacy of current mitigation tactics and fairness out comes
 Providing comprehensive understandings of how the bias can have effect in individuals
and groups, especially underprivileged groups
 Contributing actions insights and recommendation for the AI programmers,
policymakers, and industries to adopt more ethical and inclusive AI learnings.

By studying both the technical and ethical dimensions of bias in AI, this research seeks to
support the development of trustworthy and socially responsible AI system that is safely
included in high-impact settings.

1.3. Significance of the Research

The research is important because it could have an effect to the creation, assessment, and use of
AI in real life situations. Biased programs may end up in a systemic bias, reduced trust, legal
issues, and harm to people specially people who are week or poor groups because of AI
becoming more useful for the society
By shedding light to this sources and consequence of algorithmic bias, the research can help to
fill the gap between ethical responsibility and technical innovations. This will contribute more
understanding of fairness in AI and support the development of best practices for the bias
mitigation.

The information that we could gather from this study:

 Regulators and Policy makers, legislations and crafting guideline for ethical AI use.
 Engineers and Developers, detecting and reducing bias by implementing technical
solutions.
 Industry leaders and Organizations, adopting responsible AI studies and building more
inclusive AI technologies.
 Researchers and Academics, studying AI ethics and fairness by offering foundations.

CRP/2024/25/AI
iii

1.4. Research objectives

This research is to explore and address issues of the bias and fairness in AI system. The main
object of the study is to:
1. Finding the common types and sources of the bias which effects the AI algorithms during
training and deployment.
2. Evaluate and investigate the fairness metrics that are used in quantify and detect bias in
AI technologies.
3. Investigating the existing bias mitigation methods and assessing their effectiveness in
different AI applications.
4. Exploring the legal, ethical, and social implications of biased AI technologies on people
and communities
5. Developing practical recommendations for AI programmers, policymakers, and
industries to implement fair and responsible AI studies
6.
These are the object that will guide this research towards producing technical insights and ethical
guidance to improve AI fairness

1.5. Research Sub objectives

The following sub-objectives will guide the direction of the study:

1. Analysing the case study where AI bias has had a measurable real-world consequence.
2. Comparing different fairness metrics (e.g. demographic parity, equalized odds, disparate
impact) and assess their suitability for a variety of fields .
3. Reviewing open-source AI models and datasets to investigate patterns or evidence of
embedded bias.
4. Conducting interviews or surveys with AI users to gather information about current bias
mitigation techniques.
5. Assessing legal and regulatory frameworks related to AI fairness across different sectors
and regions.
6. Propose a check list or framework that industries can use to assess and reduce bias during
AI technology development and deployments.

These are the sub-objectives that can help to break down the research to manageable activities
and ensure comprehensive coverage of the technical and ethical dimensions.

CRP/2024/25/AI
iv

1.6. Research questions

These are the following key question that will guide the research:
1. The primary sources of bias in AI algorithms, and how are they manifest in the practical
uses?
2. Using the existing metrics and evaluation techniques how can fairness in AI technologies
can be measured?
3. What are the tactics and tools that are available to mitigate bias in AI, and how will it be
effect across the different contexts?
4. What societal and ethical implications emerge from the deployment of biased AI
technologies?
5. How can the industries and policymakers promote fairness and responsibility in the
creation and application of AI?
These are the questions design to investigate both theoretical and practical dimensions of bias
and fairness in AI, forming the foundation of the project investigate.

1.7. Hypothesis

The following central hypothesis which the research is based on:

“If AI algorithms are trained on biased or datasets that are not representative, then the out
coming models will be create discriminatory or unfair results; but the application of
appropriate fairness metrics and bias mitigation methods that can mostly reduce the effect
and improve the ethical reliability of AI technologies”

This hypothesis will be tested through the analysis of AI models, datasets, fairness metrics, and
mitigation tactics, supported by both qualitative insights and quantitative evaluation from
practical case studies and expert opinions.
