ICSE CLASS 10 2025-26

SCIENCE PAPER 2 (PHYSICS)

SOUND WAVES
Max.score: 25 Time: 30min
(Question 1 to 5 carries 1 score each. Answer any five) 1×5=5
1. Two sound waves X and Y have the same amplitude and the same wave pattern but their
frequencies are 60 Hz and 120 Hz respectively, then
(a) X will be shriller and Y will be grave (b) X will be grave and Y will be shriller
(c) X will differ in quality than Y (d) X is louder than Y.
2. Water from a tap is allowed to fall in a vessel with a thin neck. The pitch of sound produced
by falling water .......... with the volume of water in the vessel.
(a) increases (b) decreases (c) remains same (d) none of these
3. The amplitude of a sound wave is increased from 1 mm to 2 mm. The loudness of the
sound will:
(a) same (b) decrease (c) increase two time (d) increase four times
4. With respect to ultrasonic waves, which of the following statements is incorrect?
a. They travel undeviated through a long distance
b. They have a speed greater than the speed of sound in a medium
c. They are not easily absorbed in a medium
d. They can be confined to a narrow beam
5. For normal ears, sensitivity is maximum at the frequency:
(a) 5 kHz (b) 10 kHz (c) 1 kHz (d) 500 Hz
6. A pipe open at both ends has a fundamental frequency f in air. The pipe is now dipped
vertically in a water drum to half of its length. The fundamental frequency of the air
column is now equal to: [NEET 2025 ]
3𝑓
(a) 2 f (b) f (c) (d) 2f

(Question 7 to 10 carries 2 scores each) (2×4=8)

7. State two difference between a musical note and noise.
8. The diagram below shows three different modes of vibration P, Q and R of the same
string of a given length.

(a) Which vibration will produce a louder sound and why?

(b) Which vibration will produce sound of maximum shrillness (or pitch) and why?
9. Two waves of the same pitch have their amplitudes in the ratio 2 : 3.
(i) What will be the ratio of their loudness?
(ii) What will be the ratio of their frequencies?
10.
(a) What is meant by an echo? Mention one important condition that is necessary for an
echo to be heard distinctly.
(b) Mention one important use of echo.
ICSE CLASS 10 2025-26

(Question 11 to 14 carries 3 scores each) (3×4=12)

11. Burette filled with water. The tap is opened and the water level gradually falls. It is
observed that the sound becomes the loudest for a particular length of air column.
(a) What is the name of the phenomenon taking place when this happens?
(b) Why does the sound become the loudest?
(c) What is the name of the phenomenon taking place when sound is produced for another
length of air column and is not the loudest?

12. A person standing in front of a cliff fires a gun and hears its echo after 3 s. If the speed of
sound in air is 336 ms-1.
(a) Calculate the distance of the person from the cliff.
(b) After moving a certain distance from the cliff, he fires the gun again and this time the
echo is heard 1.5 s later than the first. Calculate the distance that the person moved.

13. A person standing at a distance x in front of a cliff fires a gun. Another person B standing
behind the person A at a distance y from the cliff hears two sounds of the fired shot after
2 s and 3 s respectively. Calculate x and y (take speed of sound 320 ms-1)

14. In the diagram below A,B,C,D, are four pendulums suspended from the same elastic string
PQ. The length of A and C are equal to each other while the length of pendulum B is smaller
that of D. Pendulum A is set into a mode of vibrations.

(i) Name the type of vibrations taking place in pendulums B and D?

(ii) What is the state of pendulum C?
(iii) State the reason for the type of vibrations in pendulums B and C.
