Welcome!
We’re beyond excited to kick off the 2025 season and thrilled that
you're interested in joining the Heat Wave battery! This season
promises to be full of energy, growth, and unforgettable
experiences, and this packet has everything you need to get
started on that journey. Inside, you’ll find guidance on the skills
and techniques to focus on that will help make your audition
process and summer a success.
Our technique is shaped by the passion and experience of our
staff, and while it's our preferred approach, it's designed to build a
strong foundation that will make you a better percussionist and
musician overall. Throughout the audition process, through both
camps and video submissions, you’ll receive feedback to help you
grow and refine your craft.
Remember, every moment is an audition,
so bring your best energy, focus, and
attention to detail every step of the way.

Technique

Our approach to technique is all about letting the music guide us, with sound leading the
way. We prioritize how the stick feels in your hand and the energy it brings to each beat.
Rather than focusing on uniform visuals, we’re aiming for a unified sound—one that’s
strong, powerful, and uniquely ours.

Our technique revolves around two key pillars: sound and feel. As the season kicks off,
we’ll break down exactly what we’re looking for, helping each of you tap into what makes
our technique so impactful. Our goal? Creating the best possible sound with a relaxed,
natural feel. Get excited to dive deep into this approach and make every moment count
on the field!

This year, we're all about letting the music lead our
technique and creating a powerful, unified sound that
feels right and resonates deeply. Sound comes first—
our goal is for every beat to deliver impact and
clarity, driven by how the stick naturally feels in your
hand. Instead of focusing on everyone looking
exactly the same, we’re all about defining a sound
that’s vibrant and strong, making our technique
decisions with that in mind.

Our approach revolves around two main pillars:


sound and feel. Throughout the season, we’ll dive deep into these concepts, helping you
understand and master what we’re looking for and why. Together, we’ll work toward
crafting the ultimate sound with maximum relaxation. Get pumped, and let’s make this a
season to remember!

Feel

Feel is everything—it’s how we connect to the music, the stickings, our visual
responsibilities, and even the way the stick rests in our hands. At the core of our
approach is relaxation; the more relaxed you are, the better your sound.

When it comes to stick feel, start from a neutral hand position, allowing the stick’s
weight to take over. And don’t forget about posture—keeping your body aligned and
relaxed behind the drum is essential. From your neck to your shoulders to your hands,
staying tension-free will bring out the full resonance we’re after.

Feeling the music means being in tune with timing, stickings, and rhythm. We’re
channeling that natural, human vibe that great drum set players bring to their
instrument, embracing rhythm and dynamics with confidence. Let’s make every note
count and make this season unforgettable!
Grip and Stroke Types

We're stoked to dive into the technique that’s going to define our season and set you up
for success! When it comes to grip and stroke, our approach is all about control, power,
and finesse, letting you make the most out of each beat while keeping things relaxed
and responsive.

For all sections, the grip


begins with a solid fulcrum
between your thumb, index,
and middle finger.
Depending on the music,
you might ease back, letting
the thumb, middle, and ring
fingers do the work for
those slower, more powerful
phrases. This gives us more
leverage and flexibility to
create a fuller sound when
it counts. Think of it as
channeling that drumset or
concert snare vibe—letting
the stick rest further back
for maximum control and
quick responses!

Our technique centers on leading from the fulcrum, not the tip, so your whole hand
comes up as a unit. This creates a smooth, relaxed motion that, when sped up, almost
looks like a whip—picture flicking water off the tip of the stick! Using this controlled
“Moeller” style motion, your wrist, arm, and fingers work together to produce a dynamic,
full sound with each stroke. With power muscles and fast-twitch muscles engaged, you’ll
get volume and speed with every hit.

We break down strokes into five essential types: Full Stroke, Downstroke, Tap, Upstroke,
and Twitch Stroke. Each serves its purpose for different dynamics and accents. For
example, Downstrokes work like a brass player’s air support—controlled and smooth,
never choked. Upstrokes are like reverse taps, keeping the energy alive and building
intensity. By maintaining a consistent grip and keeping pressure minimal, we’ll capture
the best sound with max resonance.

Let’s kick off an epic season with Heatwave! Here are some practice tips to help you
bring your best and start strong:

Practice Tips:

• Basics come first! Use the basics section in the packet to build essential skills,
setting you up for the more challenging etudes ahead.
• Daily practice is a must! Build that strength and dexterity—drumming is as much
physical as it is musical.
• Focus on technique. Don’t just rush through the exercises; mastering the basics
will elevate your performance.
• Practice in front of a mirror. Watch yourself, adjust, and aim to improve every rep.
• METRONOME TIME. The metronome is your best friend for staying on time.
• Practice on a drum whenever possible. This gives you a feel for real playing
conditions.
• Study other groups. Emulating their best practices helps you discover what works
for you.

What to Expect & Bring:


We’re here to make the best choices for the ensemble, which means you’ll see down-
the-line reps, individual auditions, subsection work, and more. These aren’t tests to
stress you out—they’re ways for us to see your skills, endurance, and focus under
pressure, which are key in drum corps. We’re aiming for excellence, so bring your best,
even if it’s intense!

Packing List:

• Water Jug: Fill up a sports water jug with ice and water before you arrive! We
must stay hydrated!
• Sunscreen: After all, we are in Florida and the heat can be brutal at times!
Reapply as needed!
• Sticks: Bring what you’re comfortable with—it’s your audition, so use what suits
you best.
• Your own drum & stand: We’ll have instruments, but it’s best if everyone’s
covered.
• A drum pad: You’ll have time off the drum, but you still need to keep drumming!
• Binder with music, plastic sleeves, pencil, and highlighter.
• Earplugs: Required when we’re inside.
• Athletic clothes and shoes: Dress to move—no jeans!

Exercises
Below is a packet of “Basic Skill Sets”. They
cover a multitude of isolated motions,
skillsets, and rudimental vocabulary. These
exercises are a good thing to have in your
arsenal, no matter what section. Keep in
mind, everything is subject to change. You
may be asked to play something not in the
packet. Everything should be played with a
metronome. There are listed tempos but be
prepared to play everything faster or slower.

Definitions
Dynamics:

• We prefer to use dynamics and not heights defining volumes. The dynamic will be
defined by the sound we are looking for in a given moment.
• Though this is relative, we correlate our system with the height system using the
conversions below. This is all just a guideline, but we will make adjustments as
needed.
• pp - 1”, (grace notes) / under the fulcrum
• p - 3” (tap) / parallel to the drum, flat wrist
• mp - 6”
• mf - 9”
• f - 12” / full wrist turn, no arm
• ff and above - full arm involvement, “primal”

Set Position/Mark Time/Duts:

• The sticks will start in, about a finger’s length above the drum. They will come out
on beat 7 of the count-off and come back in on beat 2 at the end of the exercise.
Repeat as necessary with a loop. This is a temporary process for camps, we will go
into greater detail later about how our full process works.
• We will mark time with the heels together and toes apart (1st position). The whole
foot will come off the ground slightly, and we allow a natural side-to-side sway in
our mark time. As a default, we will mark time off the LEFT foot. The mark time
starts on the last 4 counts of count in (start on count 5). We mark time between
reps and until the last time.
• Duts are short and articulate and only loud enough to make an audible sound to
the people immediately to your left and right. The duts start when the feet start
marking time (the last 4 counts from the tap-off).
In Person Auditions
• Be prepared to play any of the exercises in the Basic Skill Sets portion of the
packet. Also, have a solo/excerpt prepared for your individual audition.
• We will be marching and playing, so bring carrier adjustment tools such as Alan
keys and a drum key.
• Basses, prepare to play at least two (2) different bass parts. This will allow the
staff maximum flexibility while evaluating multiple configurations of the bass line.
Please bring your own bass mallets, as well as snare sticks and a snare pad. Bass
mallets may not be provided.

Video Auditions
Recording Guidelines

• Record in a well-lit area, free of distractions or other noise.


• Use a stable surface, recording with a phone is ok.
• Record in landscape.
• AUDIO QUALITY IS IMPORTANT- Test to avoid clipping, distortion, low audio
moments, etc.
• Make sure your metronome is audible; all videos need to be submitted with an
audible metronome.
• Make sure we can see your hands, and you, from head to toe. Foot timing as well
as musicianship will need to be evaluated.

Required Materials:

• Verbally give a brief bio before playing


• Name, age, High School/College, marching experience, and instructor/teacher that
shaped you the most.
• All of page 1 @ 120, 135, and 150 BPM
• Sixteenth-Note Timing 1-Note and 3-Note @ 120 BPM
• Irish Spring @ 130 BPM
• Gallop @ 120, 135, and 150 BPM
• Short Short Long, Triplet Diddle, Chicken and Roll, Sixteenth-Note Diddle,
Sixteenth Note Grid, Accent Tap, and SSL @ 120, 135, and 150 BPM
