A BEGINNERS GUIDE TO BEAT MAKING


WELCOME TO THE MPC ACADEMY

Welcome Beat Makers/Producers to the MPC Academy. Firstly we’d like to thank you for
purchasing the brand new MPC Studio to start your musical journey.

If you’re new to music production or even have many years of experience, your tutor (Akai’s very
own Andy Mac) will guide you through a complete in-depth Masterclass course covering incredible
techniques from his 25 years of production and studio experience using the new MPC Studio &
MPC 2 Software. Inside this Masterclass, Andy covers the compete production process across 11
episodes making a song from scratch using MPC Studio and the internal Factory Content. We’ve
also added some “bonus "samples and chord progression files which you’ll need to download
before you start the masterclass.

Over the next hour, join Andy to learn MPC’s iconic workflow combination of powerful features,
FX, Mixing Beats, Adding Instruments , Lo-Fi FX to sharing your beats online taking your beats to
the next level.

INSIDE THE MASTERCLASS
PROJECT FILE DOWNLOAD

Thank you for downloading the project assets for the MPC Studio MASTERCLASS.

Please follow the instructions below so you can follow along with the Beats Academy training and get
the most out of your new MPC Live 2.

1. Download the “Masterclass Project File” from the Link in the video description. Once
downloaded, unzip the files on your desktop. You should now have a folder called MPC
Studio Masterclass Assets. (See Image Right)

2. Inside the Masterclass Assets folder are your “MPC Masterclass project files and Chord
Progressions File. (See Image Right)

3. To installer the progressions file - place the file into the following location. Library/AppSupport/MPC/
Progressions -

4. To load up the “Masterclass Project Assets (Template) Double click on the MPC
Masterclass XPJ file located inside your downloaded “MPC Studio Masterclass Assets
Folder” (The Red XPJ File) . This will automatically launch your MPC Software and open
the project. (See image of Red XPJ File Below)

5. Now that your project is open,


you can now follow along with the
Masterclass.

6. SEQ (1) Will play the original


Masterclass song.

7. SEQ (2) Is the version Andy


created in the video.

8. SEQ (3) Is the (Start Here) blank


sequence where you can follow
along with the MASTERCLASS from
scratch.
EPISODE 1 8:02
NAVIGATION & SOUNDS
In this first Episode, Andy will show you how to navigate around
MPC Studio/MPC Software giving you a deeper understanding
where all your sounds and project files are located. You will also learn
key workflow parameters along with setting up the Masterclass
template. You will also hear a preview of the track you’ll be creating
from the ground up.

MAKING THE BEAT


In Episode 2, Andy will walk you through the process making the beat
from scratch using the iconic MPC workflow. The video will cover
programming the beat from the ground up…..building out the Kick &
Snare foundation, adding Hats using “Note Repeat” and the
TouchStrip followed by, percussion and atmospheric textures.

INSTRUMENTS & CHORDS
In Episode 3, Andy will guide you through the process adding MPC’s
internal plug-in instruments to your beat . This will cover using MPC’s
chords and scales mode adding depth and movement. The video will
also cover everything from, track types, navigation around plug-in
instruments to accessing chords, scales and progression mode.

CREATING 808 & SYNTHBASS

In Episode 4, Andy will guide you through the process of adding


Synth Bass and 808 to your beat giving your production a tight
pumping low end. You’ll learn everything from how to add Glides to
instruments to setting up scales mode to play your Basslines.

In Episode 5 Andy will walk you through the process, adding addition
Drums and Percussion elements to the beat which creates movement
and feel.

SYNTH LEAD LINES

In Episode 6, Andy will utilise MPC’s onboard Hype synth engine to


add synth lead textures over the beat.

CREATING VOCAL CHOPS / FX


In this Episode, Andy will show you his process for chopping vocal
samples then adding MPC’s Vocal Tuning FX Suite to the beat. Andy
will then add Lo-Fi FX to the chops giving you today’s modern vocal
sound.

ARRANGING BEAT INTO A SONG


In this Episode. Andy will walk you through the process turning the
finished beat into a full song arrangement from the 8 bars. This
technique can then be applied to your own music productions.

HOW TO MIX THE BEAT
In this Episode, Andy will show you how to add subtle mixing
techniques to the beat bringing out the sonics. The video will cover
techniques such as Layering, Adding Transients, Reverb, Delay, to
Soft Clipping, Lo-Fi.

ADDING LO-FI & TOUCHSTRIP FX
In this Episode, Andy will work you through the process adding real-
time FX to your beat using MPC Studio’s TouchStrip. This technique
adds a whole new level of performance over your production which can
applied to your own music or even for live performances.

EXPORTING BEATS & SHARING


In this episode, Andy will walk you though the process of exporting
your final beat out of MPC. This video covering many different file
formats such as MP3, WAV to audio Stems. He will also share his
knowledge how to export files for external mixing inside a DAW.
