Sophia Drevenstam

Paragraph 1

Sophia Drevenstam is a female contemporary illustrator and printmaker based in Berlin. She
was born around 1992. Her work is predominantly posted online on her Tumblr and also on
her Instagram @scrambledeyes. Her illustrations are posted alongside a series of hashtags
and whimsical captions. She works as an illustrator and print designer at H&M.

Paragraph 2
When looking at Drevenstam’s work I think she creates pieces trying to tell a story to the
older generations from the younger generation. I think she wants to tell the older generation
about the problems that they suffer from for example work, mental health or maybe even
finding yourself. I know she creates a sort of nostalgia because she adds a lot of vintage
pieces from the 90s or 2000s to her work despite living in a modern world. Maybe this is
because she wants to remember the good times in her life. The colours she uses are very
dull, she uses a lot of munted colours maybe to show her feeling that despite the fact that I
look okay I am actually feeling depressed and dull, I actually feel alone. She keeps her shoes
in the middle maybe to show that she is the most important person to herself. I find her work
very interesting because I like how she uses colour to show her true feelings. I also like how
she uses vintage pieces to her work.

Paragraph 3

When looking at Drevenstam work I can see a pair of fashionable trainers which seem
unwore. The shoes are placed in the middle but are isolated and untied. The colour of the
shoes are bright but muted. She uses warm tones to create shadow. The shoes look very
flat and even. The blurred faces, unfinished or missing details shows a sense of loneliness
and I think that she might be suffering with depression. I believe that the pair of trainers are a
metaphorical self portrait reflecting Drevenstam's struggles and life as a young person in
today's society. I think that the untied laces suggest chaos in her life maybe because of her
lack of experience. I feel that her uses of bright but muted colours shows her mental health. I
think she is showing the mask she wears of the world vs how she really feels. I think the
shoes not being worn by anyone is her telling the viewer to step in her shoes and find the
truth about her, she is looking for empathy. I believe that the shoes aren't being glorified to
show how people and the world have thrown her away.

Paragraph 4

Drevenstam’s series of shoes links to my theme of autobiography because 'autobiography' is

about someone telling their own personal story and Drevenstam is telling her personal story
through her shoes. Overall I like her work because I like how despite it looking simple, she
beautifully presents her story. However I don't like her colour choice. I relate to her work
because I used to put on a mask alot but then I found people who said that we shouldn't hide
our true feelings and we shouldn't bury them just because we are afraid of what people
think.
Drevenstam inspired me to create shoes in my style to show and tell my story.
Paragraph 5
Comparing Drevenstam's work with Van Gogh's work I found that they both use footwear-
trainers as a metaphorical self portrait and a way to tell their personal story. They both place
the trainers in the center. However the trainers are very different despite the similarities. The
biggest difference is their gender. The colour palette is very different- Drevenstam uses a
very modern palette (her palette is bright but muted) and Van Gogh's palette is very earthy
and dull (matching the time period he lived in). Drenstram palette is very feminine and Van
Gogh's palette is dull. Van Gogh's piece involves a lot of highlights and heavy shadows
whereas Drevenstam doesn't include heavy shadows. Maybe the differences are because
Drevenstam is a contemporary artist whereas Van Gogh is a historical artist.

Personally,I prefer Drevenstam's work because I like how she presents her work in an
aesthetic way.I dislike her colour scheme for the background, however. She frequently
blends colours together using what appears to be water smudges. On the hand, I love how
Van Gogh includes simple elements that create a huge meaning for example how the
highlights show there was hope. Overall, I think Drevemstam’s work is a very good snapshot
of what it’s like to be a young artist or just a young adult and teenager in today’s generation.

Paragraph 6
I have created my own copies of Drevenstram’s work, experimenting with recreating the
textures and tones using watercolour paint and pen for mark making details. While creating
this piece, I have experimented with watercolor paint in a way that I have ever done before.
Also, I have learnt during the piece how to use a variety of thickness, direction and how to
add tones in mark making. I think I learnt techniques in watercolour paint and mark making
that I will use for the rest of my GCSE course e.g. creating implied tone with a pen and how
to manipulate watercolour to create an illustrated background.
