DEDAN KIMATHI UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY

Course outline SMA 1117 Calculus I

Prerequisite: None
Course Purpose
The aim of this course is to introduce the concepts of differential calculus as a solid foundation for
subsequent courses in Mathematics and other disciplines as well as for direct application to real life
phenomena.

Expected Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, the learner should be able to:
1. Describe properties of a function and an inverse function.
2. Apply the definition of limit to evaluate limits by multiple methods and use it to derive the
definition and rules for differentiation and integration.
3. Determine the continuity and differentiability of a function at a point and on a given range
using limits.
4. Define the derivative of a function of a single real variable and master the rules of the
differential calculus of a function of a single real variable.
5. Apply and use the fundamental tools of calculus and the principles of mathematical proofs to
solve applied and theoretical mathematical problems.
