MANAGEMENT OF STRESS AMONG UNDER GRADUATE STUDENTS
ABSTRACT
Stress is a frustrating condition where it contains an excess of work and an overload which
reduces the concentration, mentality and the normal working condition of any students. This
study examines the impact of stress on students’ and stress management among students. The
main objectives were to ascertain or identify the extent to which stress affects students’
Academic success, health and general lifestyle, as well as to inquire about the effects of existing
stress in students. A quantitative method was used in gathering and analyzing the data. For this
Purpose, questionnaires were distributed to students, who consisted of Post Graduate
Qualification The result obtained shows that nearly 40% of students feel stress in getting support
From the faculty members, fear of examination, lack of understanding the subject and feeling
More stressed in academic performance. The result has also identified that they is no difference
among the genders in experiencing the stress, were by both genders equally face impact of stress
In their performance. Stress can however be managed using various stress revealing techniques
and also introducing stress management as a part of students extra curricular activites.
CHAPTER-1
INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
Stress is an inevitable part of life, and it can be especially challenging for undergraduate
students.
Life events like starting college, getting married, changing jobs, and dealing with illness are all
potential sources of stress.
For students, moving away from home and adjusting to a new environment can be particularly
stressful as they navigate new academic and personal challenges.
While the stress that students encounter differs in intensity from major life events like marriage
or the death of a loved one, it can still be significant.
The National Institute of Mental Health has identified several common stressors for college
students, including increased academic demands, changes in family relationships, financial
responsibilities, and preparing for life after graduation.
In addition to managing these stressors, college students are also expected to learn and master a
vast amount of knowledge and skills. This pressure to succeed in a highly competitive
environment can be overwhelming and can lead to personal and social sacrifices.
As a result, many college students experience considerable stress, which can have a negative
impact on their academic performance and overall well-being.
In this case study, we will explore the management of stress among undergraduate students and
examine strategies that can help them cope with the demands of college life. You may not plan
to enter a high-stress career, but as a college student, you may find
Factors of stress
a) Financial Difficulties
It is definitely not a conducive experience when a student has to handle dual challenges of
academics and financial constraints. Life becomes very challenging when a student is behind on
bills payment; for when deadlines are not met and bills stares at you, it is enough to get a student
tensed and depressed.
b) Health Problems
Health issues are a concern to everyone because bad health causes a lot of damage to the life of a
person. In the life of a student, health problems cause a lot of stress and these stress turn out to
even make the conditions worst by adding insult to Injury. Stress can lead to physical symptoms
including headaches, upset stomach, Elevated blood pressure, chest pain, and problems sleeping.
Research suggests that stress also can bring on or worsen certain symptoms or diseases.
Academic factors
There are some factors that happen in the academic curriculum That causes so Much stress to
students. So many things take place In the day to day activities of the academic processes that
make Students stress up Increased class workload increase in class workload stresses up students
in the sense That when students have to do more than they can handle, they turn to get frustrated
and are unable to focus and think straight. Students will over schedule their plans to meet up
with the other to get good grades but eventually because these tasks are too much for them, they
end up messing everything up in situations where there are a lot of assignments to after having a
Very long day at work makes students more Confused. Also Too much workload can Also make
student to be Stressed in the sense that, when a student is undergoing So many Courses in each
of these courses are also demanding make the student not have enough time to handle all these
Courses to his or her perfection and ones that happen the student Turns to think so much and as a
result will be Stressed up and this Will have a great effect on the academic performance of the
Student
A.HOURS OF STUDIES
Every student has a life outside the academic curriculum and Environment. When a student has
to compromise and use their Personal time for other activities for studies, they turn to get bored
and lose interest in studies. At the long run, this situation Stress them up which causes them to
lose focus on academic Work. As the saying goes “all work and no play make Jack a dull Boy “,
it also applies to students since they will become dull if all they do is to use their private time for
studies and not have time for themselves
B.LANGUAGE DIFFICULTIES
Language proficiency may have a profound effect on an Individual’s ability to learn and develop,
due to its key role in the Transmission of information and regulation of cognitive Processes
(Binder & Smith 2013). Language is one factor that has so much influence on the life of a
student. Language is the Only means to communicate freely, so if students are having Issues
understanding the language been used in the academic Process it becomes a big challenge to
them and they will Eventually start thinking about it. Once this happens they become
Frustratedand stressed up when even they have communicated and the long run affects their
performance
C. EXAMINATION
Periods for examinations causes so much stress in students than one can imagine. Examination is
the only means for a student to Prove that he deserves a better grade for a course and due to these
students think a lot and also revise everything they have Learnt during the whole period of the
cause, in doing so, some Students get confused about some topics they treated and others Also
don’t know where to begin their studies from. The thought of these stuff makes them frustrated
and confused which at the Long run stress them up
D. MISSING LECTURES
It is the desire of students to miss lectures or skip school. Although some students wake up and
decide to miss lectures or School, others also have to do that due to circumstances beyond their
control. When some students miss class or lectures they Become disturbed and worried
especially of the course is on they Have difficulties in understanding. When this happens they
start To wonder how they will make up for the lessons they lost so as They will be on the same
pace with their fellow colleague in School. The thought of finding ways to make up with lessons
Which they have issues in becomes a burden the National Institute of Mental Health has
identified several common stressors for college students, including increased academic demands,
changes in family relationships, financial responsibilities, and preparing for life after graduation.
IMPACTS OF STRESS
You may not plan to enter a high-stress career, but as a college student, you may find that the
demands of college life can create stressful situations.
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) notes some of the more common stressors for
college students:
SYMPTOMS OF DISTRESS
Symptoms of stress fall into three general, but interrelated, categories—physical, mental, And
emotional. Review this list carefully. If you find yourself frequently experiencing these
symptoms, you are likely feeling distressed:
• Headaches
• Fatigue
• Gastrointestinal problems
• Hypertension (high blood pressure)
• Heart problems, such as palpitations
• Inability to focus/lack of concentration
• Sleep disturbances, whether it’s sleeping too much or an inability to sleep
• Sweating palms/shaking hands
• Anxiety
• Sexual problems.
Even when you don’t realize it, stress can cause or contribute to serious physical Disorders. It
increases hormones such as adrenaline and, which affect your Metabolism, immune reactions,
and other stress responses. That can lead to increases in your heart rate, respiration, blood
pressure, and physical demands on your internal organs.
Sustained high level of stress is no laughing matter. It can affect every area of your life—
Productivity in the workplace and classroom, increased health risks, and relationships
It’s important to understand that clinical depression is a real, not an “imaginary” illness. It’s not
a passing mood or a sign of personal
a) MANAGING TIME – Proper time management is one of the most Effective stress relieving
techniques. Whether its relaxation, work or study time must be spent wisely students must be
able to Design and stick to a timetable choose a relaxing break between Work and study been if
it’s just taking at time to breath.
b) EXERCISE AND GET SOME AIR – A healthy lifestyle is essential for students, especially at
university level. Instead of partying at night and being cooked up at home studying throughout
the day, take at time to get some air and exercise stress is generally laws in people who maintain
a healthy routine.
c) STAY POSITIVE – if you keep focusing on the negative aspect of a situation, you will be
burdens’ by mental stress instead try to look at the glass half full, and stay optimist through
tough times.
d) ORGANIZE YOUR ACADEMIC LIFE – organization is very importantin academic life for
dealing with stress. By keeping academic notes organized, turning in assignments on time, and
keeping track of all deadlines, stress can reduced to a great extent
e) TAKE ONE STEP AT A TIME – Don’t put too many eyes in one based instead, it’s best to
make a list and sort them at one by one is helps you to be more efficient and productive
10 STRESS BUSTERS
If you’re stressed, whether by your job or something more personal, the first step to feeling
better is to identify the cause.
The most unhelpful thing you can do is turn to something unhealthy to help you cope, such as
smoking or drinking.
Not taking control of the situation and doing nothing can make your problems worse.
Some of the keys to good stress management are building emotional strength, being in control of
your situation, having a good social network, and adopting a positive outlook. What you can do
to address stress
Be active Exercise won’t make your stress disappear, but it can reduce some of the emotional
intensity that you’re feeling, clearing your thoughts and letting you deal with your problems
more calmly. For more advice, read about exercise for depression. Get started with exercise Take
control if you think you cannot do anything about your problem, your stress can get worse. That
feeling of loss of control is one of the main causes of stress and lack of wellbeing.
The act of taking control is in itself empowering, and it’s a crucial part of finding a solution that
A good support network of colleagues, friends and family can ease your work troubles and help
you see things in a different way.
The activities we do with friends can help us relax and relieve stress. Talking things through with
a friend may also help you find solutions to your problems. Read about 5 steps to mental
wellbeing, including the benefits of connecting with other people.
Many of us work long hours, meaning we often don’t spend enough time doing things we really
enjoy it’s important to take some time for socializing, relaxation or exercise. You could try
setting aside a couple of nights a week for some quality “me time” away from work.
CHALLENGE YOURSELF
Setting yourself goals and challenges, whether at work or outside, such as learning a new
language or a new sport, can help build confidence. This may help you deal with stress.
They might provide temporary relief, but in the long term, these crutches won’t solve your
problems. They’ll just create new ones. It’s best to tackle the cause of your stress.
Evidence shows that People, who help others, through activities such as volunteering or
community work, often become more resilient. If you don’t have time to volunteer, try to do
someone a Favors every day. It can be something as small as helping someone cross the road or
going on a coffee run for colleagues. Find out more about giving for mental wellbeing Work
smarter, not harder Working smarter means prioritizing your work, concentrating on the tasks
that’ll make a real difference. Leave the least important tasks to last. Accept that you will not
have time for everything.
Try to be positive Look for the positives in life, and things for which you’re grateful.
NEED OF STUDY
Academic stress is the feeling of anxiety or apprehension over one’s performance in the
academic activities. It can lead to students being unable to Perform to the best of their abilities in
examinations. At college there is a range of academic pressure feel, derived from a need for
perfection, worry over Grades, parental pressure, competition, sports, or a tough class load. The
nervous breakdowns, panic attacks, Burnouts, and depression are also apparent in many younger
students. The same situation is not always stressful Students were considered to be the future
pillars who take the responsibilities.
HYPOTHESIS
While stress management techniques can be helpful in reducing stress, there are some limitations
to these approaches. Here are some of the potential limitations Not all stressors can be
eliminated: While some sources of stress can be reduced or eliminated, such as a difficult work
situation or a toxic relationship, other stressors may be outside of our control, such as a natural
disaster or a global pandemic. In these cases, stress management techniques may be less
effective in alleviating the stress.
Limited effectiveness: While stress management techniques such as meditation, exercise, or deep
breathing can be effective in reducing stress, they may not work for everyone. Individuals may
have different preferences and responses to different techniques, and what works for one person
may not work for another.
Time constraints: Some stress management techniques, such as exercise or meditation, may
require a significant time commitment. This can be challenging for individuals who have a busy
schedule or other responsibilities.
Dependence: There is also the risk of becoming dependent on stress management techniques as a
means of coping with stress. While these techniques can be helpful in the short term, they may
not address the underlying causes of stress and may not provide a long-term solution.
Mental health conditions: For individuals with mental health conditions such as anxiety or
depression, stress management techniques may not be sufficient to alleviate their symptoms.
Overall, stress management techniques can be useful in managing stress, but it is important to
recognize their limitations and seek additional support when necessary.

REVIEW OF LITERATURE
REVIEW OF LITERATURE
RENA REPETTI AND SHOO-WEN WANG (2017) this research paper evaluated on how work
stressors affect family relationships paints a nuanced picture that may include coping processes
and positive outcomes for families. Although we do see echoes of job-related negative mood
finding direct expression at home, they also observed other behaviors, like social withdrawal,
that may serve to protect the family from the direct display of stress. This study also explains
why, in addition to negative mood, the mediators of spillover include cognitive variables
BHARATHI T, DR. KS GUPTA (2017) Researchers have made their comments on variables
that affects job stress and productivity. The variables for this study on job stress are workload,
role ambiguity, gender discrimination, interpersonal relationship.
Thevariablesforefficiencyaretimings/workschedule,competenceofsupervisor, compensation,
systems and procedures, group dynamics
VEMURI SWATHI, M. SUDHIR REDDY (2016) Study evaluated that the Stress is a growing
problem in the workplaces and a particular magnitude for working26 women. The problems due
to high levels of stress can be exhibited physically, psychologically and behaviorally by an
individual. The most serious effects of stress relate to performance. Women employees report
more non fatal but long term and disabling health problems. The researcher describes that
working women generally involved simultaneously in many tasks, juggling between family and
work responsibilities, which leads towards stress among them.
ANILA.K.P, DR. V. KRISHNAVENI (2017) there are various factors which are responsible for
job stress they can be broadly classified into external factors relating to organization and work-
family conflicts, and internal factors.
Certain occupations are more stressful, especially those in which there is high emotional
involvement.
Job stress has become a real challenge for a worker and their employing organization. An
organization and working environment transform than employee faces many stress problems.
Hence, it is important that the work place is continuously being monitored for stress problem.
Further not it is only important to identify stress problems.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
The data collection involves both primary and secondary data collection and they are collected
from the respective sources. The primary data is collected by the help of a structured
Questionnaire from students comprising of academic factors and stress factors. The secondary
Data is collected from online database, books and the journals available as source of

science. A total of 169 students of first, second, third degree students had participated, 15 (17%)
of the participants were male students, and 73 (83%) were female students, falling in the age
between 18 to 23.
Primary data were collected for the study. Secondary data were collected from articles in various
journals related to stress. Primary data were collected by administering a wellstructured and non-
disguised questionnaire, comprising of sections. The data collection instrument used in this study
was a self-administered questionnaire consisting of. The questionnaire was distributed among the
respondents through online mode via Google forms. Section 1 consisted of 5 questions regarding
the socio-demographic variables: age, gender, year of study, course and place of livin. It consists
of multiple choice and open-ended questions. Section 2 consisted of questions regarding causes
and effects of stress. The sources of stress section consisted of 20 questions and effect of stress

Stress affecting students academically leads them to have bad performance in school work.
Students experience a lack of concentration. Stress in college students can affect the ability to
concentrate, and there have been studies conducted that prove that stress interfere with a
student's ability to concentrate. Furthermore, stress affects the productivity or the output students
make. The study has also proved that nearly 46.7% of the students have agreed their work load
as part of the stress. Rakesh Kumar Agrawal &Shailendra Singh Chahar (2007) in his findings
reveals that students are experiencing role overload, role stagnation and self-role distance. The
language and the lack of support the students receive from faculty has also been a reason of
stress factors which was reported as difficulty by 65% of students. The level of experienced
stress is influenced by the resources available for the person in order to deal with specific
stressful events and situations (Moore et al, 1992). Radcliff and Lester’s (2003) studies on the
perceived stress among final year medical undergraduate students revealed that the most stressful
situations for students were the excessive class workload, the socialisation pressure, the lack of
guidance, and transition periods of transition. Moreover, the study of Keinan and Perlberg (1986)
focused on the sources of stress among university lecturers. However, this study took a specific
perspective, which differ from Moore et al(1992), and Perlberg and Keinan (1986), which
explored the differences in perceptions of potential sources of stress among undergraduate
students (age, school year, faculty and gender). The result has also identified that they is no
difference among the genders in experiencing the stress, were by both genders equally face
impact of stress in their performance.
CHAPTER – 4
CONCLUSION
There are many personal and social factors that had lead to stress among students and had
Increased beyond comparison. Undergraduates appeared to be mostly stressed by pressure
Originating from course overload and academic evaluation procedures and least stressed by a
Variety of personal, familial, and social factors. The findings revealed that academic stress was
The major cause of stress among undergraduates. The findings of this study led us to conclude
that the level of stress was similar among males And females and concluded that symptoms of
depression, anxiety and stress were highly Prevalent among undergraduate students. The study
further revealed that some of the Stressors perceived by students are quite inherent in nature. The
study revealed that the stress due to workload was different across students from Commerce,
humanities and science and had also lead to lack of time for recreation, interest and Hobbies.
Undergraduates experience workload due to vastness of curriculum and syllabus and Lack of
time to do assigned college work. The level of stress is found more in students who live away
from home in hostel or pgs to that who live with their parents. College students who live in
hostel or pgs face difficulty in accommodating away from home, adjusting with their roommates,
journey away from home the stress due to future uncertainty was similar among students from all
years of study. College students worry about their professional future or employment after
graduation as well As whether will be able to pursue post graduation.
SUGGESTIONS
Colleges are thus suggested to design a flexible course of career education based on students’
future Career development. This course must cover psychological, mental, social, and cultural
contents and Be incorporated into formal curricula of each department.
College authorities should take care while preparing rules and regulations. It will not hurt the
Minds other students.
Colleges should provide more support and care to help students cope with various stressors and
Identify students having stress reactions as soon as possible. Besides, through use of emotion-
