Math Exam

This document provides formulas for calculating arc length, surface area, and volume of solids of revolution in integral geometry. It includes specific methods such as the disk, washer, and shell methods, along with quick tips for applying these concepts. The formulas are presented for curves defined in terms of both x and y variables.

Integral Geometry Formula Sheet

1. Arc Length of a Curve

y = f(x): L = integral from a to b of sqrt(1 + (dy/dx)^2) dx

x = g(y): L = integral from c to d of sqrt(1 + (dx/dy)^2) dy

2. Surface Area of Revolution

About x-axis: S = integral from a to b of 2*pi*y*sqrt(1 + (dy/dx)^2) dx

About y-axis: S = integral from a to b of 2*pi*x*sqrt(1 + (dy/dx)^2) dx

3. Volume of Solid of Revolution

Disk Method (x-axis): V = integral from a to b of pi*[f(x)]^2 dx

Washer Method: V = integral from a to b of pi*([R(x)]^2 - [r(x)]^2) dx
Shell Method (y-axis): V = integral from a to b of 2*pi*x*f(x) dx

4. Quick Tips

- Use dy/dx for curves in x, dx/dy for curves in y.

- For revolution, visualize which axis the shape is turning around.
- Use the shell method when disk/washer is hard to apply.
