Piano, Performance Grade 3

Overall result: Merit

Anon.: Minuet in G, BWV Anh. II 116 24/30

This was brightly played and moved along at a good pace. The melody projected clearly and the notes
were accurate in both hands with most rhythms even. The touch was balanced between the hands but
there needed to be more feel for varied articulation and dynamics to really bring out the elegant shapes
of the Minuet. In particular, quieter moments could have been more fully used to bring out its dance
style. It was a fluent account however.

Nancy Litten: The Sad Ghost 24/30

This had a smoothly played main theme and reliable notes. Rhythmically the introductory bars needed
to be more accurate, and although there was some give and take in the pace through the piece, some
bars did need a little more consistent stability. The melody sang out clearly but the dynamics could have
been more gentle to capture the melancholy mood with room then to create a little more shape at the
peak moment and through the tapering at the end. The pace was largely relaxed however.

Nakada: The Song of Twilight (from Piano Pieces for Children) 25/30
A legato melodic line sang out clearly over the accompanying chords and most of the pedalling was well
sustained whilst retaining clarity. Some of the chords could have been a little more neatly placed and
there were some less even semiquavers in the melody at times. The dynamics did have gradation and
shape but some of the contours could have been a little more gradual. The notes were accurate and a
regular underlying pace was maintained with poise at the end.

Gillock: The Spanish Guitar (from Accents Around the World) 25/30
A bold start had a defined touch in the repeated note patterns and well held pauses helped to
differentiate between the contrasting phrases. In the latter stages, some of the repeated semiquaver
notes did need to be a little more even and there was some less regular triplets. Otherwise they were
reliable and the smooth section in the middle was clearly differentiated, despite needing to be a little
more gentle. The colourful changes of character were evident in the piece and the notes were generally
secure.

Performance as a whole 25/30

This was a varied programme presented in a contrasting sequence. There could have been a little more
space and stillness between the items for each to fully settle but the playing itself was fluent with
suitable tempi underpinning each of the musical moods. The technical delivery was generally reliable,
although there were some less consistent rhythmic movements. The notes were reliable and the touch
balanced, but to fully create the different musical styles, there did need to be a little more lightness and
delicacy within the dynamic range to characterise both the lyrical playing and the lively items. A little
more variety in the touch and dynamic colour would have further helped to bring out the differing styles.
The playing was well projected throughout however.
