Section C (Assertion and Reasoning)

Directions: In the following questions, a statement of assertion (A) is followed by a statement of
reason (R). Mark the correct choice as:
(a) Both assertion (A) and reason (R) are true and reason (R) is the correct explanation of
assertion (A).
(b) Both assertion (A) and reason (R) are true but reason (R) is not the correct explanation of
assertion (A).

(c) Assertion (A) is true but reason (R) is false.
(d) Assertion (A) is false but reason (R) is true.

22) Assertion: The expression 6x5 – 4x3/2 + 2x2 = 2 is not a polynomial because the term
– 4x3/2 contains a rational power of x.
Reason: The degree of the polynomial (x2 – 2)(x – 3)(x + 4) is 4.

Section D (Case Study)

26) Designing a Garden Layout

Sailesh is designing a rectangular garden in his backyard. The length of the garden is (2x + 3)
meters, and the width is (x + 1) meters. To make the garden look more aesthetic, he decides to
add a path of uniform width around the garden, increasing the total area.

Answer the following questions:

a. Find the polynomial expression for the area of the original garden before adding the
path.

Page 3/4
First Term Assignment 2025-26 Class IX Subject: Mathematics
b. Expand and simplify the polynomial expression for the area.
c. Suppose the uniform path has a width of 'y' meters on all sides. Write the polynomial
expression for the new area of the garden including the path.
d. If x = 5 metres and y = 2 metres find the area of the garden

(i) with the path (ii) without the path

27) A school is organizing a fundraising event to support a local charity. The students are divided
into three groups: Group A, Group B, and Group C. Each group is responsible for collecting
donations from different areas of the town. Group A consists of 30 students and each student is
expected to collect ‘x’ amount of money. The polynomial representing the total amount collected
by Group A is given as A(x) = 4x2 + 3x -10. Group B consists of 20 students and each student is
expected to collect ‘y’ amount of money. The polynomial representing the total amount collected
by Group B is given as B(y) = 9y2 – 4y + 7. Group C consists of 40 students and each student is
expected to collect ‘z’ amount of money. The polynomial representing the total amount collected
by Group C is given as C(z) = 4z2 + 3z – 2.

Based on the above information answer the following questions:

a) What is the coefficient of x in the polynomial A(x)?

b) What is the coefficient of y2 the polynomial B(y)?
c) What is the constant term in the polynomial C(z)?
d) Write the factors of the polynomial A(x)?
e) What is the total number of students in all three groups combined?
