QUESTION 2 Read the extract below and answer the questions that follow. Gender inequality Gender inequality could lead to different forms of discrimination and prejudices. For teenagers, it could lead to teenage pregnancy and other unfortunate social challenges that they may come their way. Peer pressure could be one of the main causal factors for girls and boys to be involved in various discriminatory and damaging behavioural tendencies. These tendencies are based on earlier exposure fo certain behavioural tendencies. They then become a normal way of doing things, despite the negative results that may be experienced as a result. Incidents of gender inequality could also affect teenagers’ ability to make informed career choices. There could be negative traditional belief systems that push the youth to choose certain careers over others, due to unequal power relations between boys and girls; something that society may unintentionally promote. Self-Esteem vs Self Confidence Self-esteem and self-confidence are often used interchangeably. However, they are very different. They may all be as a result of self-awareness, but they differ in terms of how they influence the physical, emotional and psychological growth of an individual. They are therefore products of a person being in relationship with others in an environment people find themselves. Adolescent girls tend to show lower self-esteem compared to boys. They are also likely to engage in negative assessments of their physical characteristics and intellectual abilities than boys. Not surprisingly, incidence of suicide attempts, depression, and eating disorders is substantially higher in girls, than boys. The media has been identified as one major contributor to the development of these negative views and beliefs. One ‘astute researcher associated the decay in family moral systems as one of the major contributors to the death of family supportive moral foundation.
