QUESTION 1

1.1 Solve for x:

1.1.1 𝑥 2 − 6𝑥 + 5 = 0 (3)

1.1.2 (3𝑥 − 1)(𝑥 + 2) = −3 (correct to TWO decimal places) (4)

1.1.3 𝑥 − √2𝑥 − 1 = 2 (5)

1.1.4 1 < (2𝑥 − 3)2 (5)

1.2 Solve for x and y simultaneously:

−2𝑥 − 𝑦 = −1 and 2𝑥 2 − 𝑥𝑦 + 𝑦 2 = 4 (6)

1.3 Determine the value of 𝑝 for which 𝑝𝑥 + 𝑝 = −𝑥 2 + 1 will have equal roots. (4)
