KofC DGK Jomar Answering The Call
My brothers, I want to share my testimony about a journey that was both unexpected and
deeply fulfilling. When I was asked to take on the role of Deputy Grand Knight, imagine this: me,
barely out of my twenties, suddenly entrusted with a leadership position in Council 5681, M-46,
Our Lady of Remedies Parish, Malate Catholic Church. It wasn’t a grand coronation—it was
more of a bewildered, “Wait, me?” moment.
I had always been a devout Catholic, having served as an altar boy and later as a Eucharistic
Minister, but stepping into this role felt entirely different. I was hesitant, unsure if I had the
experience or wisdom for such a responsibility. I felt young, unprepared, and frankly, a little
intimidated. It was like winning the lottery—but instead of cash, the prize was stacks of
paperwork and an endless stream of meetings!
The funny thing is, I wasn’t exactly the most experienced candidate. Compared to some of the
other members, I was practically a newcomer. Many of the Knights had decades of experience—
a wealth of wisdom and leadership I could only aspire to. I was still navigating the intricacies of
our bylaws, understanding the depth of our charitable initiatives, and learning the delicate
balance of leadership.
Truth be told, I was initially terrified. I pictured myself fumbling through speeches, struggling to
manage projects, and making a fool of myself in front of distinguished gentlemen who had likely
been Knights before I was even born. My inner monologue was a relentless loop of, “What have
I gotten myself into?” punctuated by the occasional, “I should have just stayed home and
watched Netflix.”
But then I remembered the words of Scripture: "Do not be afraid, for I am with you." (Joshua
1:9). With prayer and the unwavering support of my fellow Knights, I took a leap of faith. The
campaign itself became a lesson in humility, teamwork, and complete reliance on God's
guidance. Now, as Deputy Grand Knight, I am learning to lead with faith, compassion, and a
servant’s heart. It is a challenge, but it is also an incredible opportunity—to serve my
community, to strengthen my character, and to grow even closer to God. My message to you,
especially the younger generation, is this: Don’t let fear hold you back from answering God's
call. He never asks without equipping us for the tasks He sets before us.
Stepping into this role, I began to understand what it truly means to be a Knight of Columbus—
living out the four foundational principles of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism. Our
charitable works, from aiding local families in need to contributing to national and international
causes, embody the spirit of selfless giving. The unity within our council, despite our differences
in age and background, is a testament to the power of shared faith and purpose. Our fraternity
is more than just a title—it is a brotherhood, a support system that extends far beyond
meetings and into our everyday lives. And our patriotism—our deep love for our country and
commitment to its well-being—reminds us that faith and service go hand in hand.
My youth and inexperience, while initially a source of anxiety, turned out to be an unexpected
asset. My perspective, perhaps less jaded and more open to new ideas, brought fresh energy to
the council. I approached challenges with a different mindset, suggesting innovative solutions
and embracing collaborative problem-solving. The more experienced Knights, far from
dismissing me as naive, welcomed my contributions and provided invaluable mentorship.
So, if you're a fellow Christian looking for a way to deepen your faith and serve your community,
consider joining the Knights of Columbus. This journey has been both unexpected and incredibly
rewarding for me, and it could be for you too. We strive to live out our principles of **charity,
unity, fraternity, and patriotism** every day. Come join us! We're always looking for good men
to join our ranks, regardless of age or experience. You might be surprised at what you can
achieve. And who knows? Maybe one day, you’ll be the one sharing your own story.
