Installation
1. Hydrants should be handled with care to avoid damage. It is recommended to keep hydrants closed until use.
2. If the hydrant is not to be used straight away then it is recommended to coat threads and other machined parts with an anti-rust
oil and the hydrant should be stored in a dry and ventilated indoor area. For long-term storage, the hydrant should be checked
regularly.
3. Before installation of hydrants, the connection should be free from dirt or other matter.
4. The positioning of the hydrant should be in accordance with local requirements. Ideally the pumper should face the street and all
connections should be away from any obstruction to connecting hoses.
5. After the hydrant has been installed and tested, it is recommended to fully flush the hydrant before closing for service.
Operation
1. Verify that all of the hydrant outlets are fully closed.
2. Remove the desired outlet Hose Cap, or Pumper Cap, using the supplied hydrant wrench.
3. Connect the hose(s) to the hydrant. Slowly open the desired outlet by turning the corresponding valve nut (on the opposite side of
the hydrant to the outlet) in an anti-clockwise direction, using the supplied hydrant wrench.
4. Turn the stem in the clockwise direction to close the desired valve and shut water flow off.
5. After the hydrant valves have been closed, carefully remove the hose or apparatus and visually verify that the hydrant valve is fully
closed and no debris is preventing full valve closure.
6. Replace the Hose or Pumper Cap using the hydrant wrench.
Maintenance
1. With caps removed, visually inspect hydrant inlet flange joint, outlet nozzles, valve seats, and stem inserts for leaks. If leaks are
present, attempt to correct the leak by tightening the component. If the leak is not resolved, mark the hydrant for follow-up repairs.
2. Inspect cap chains and cap rings for binding. Cap rings should rotate freely.
3. Clean and lubricate all nozzle threads.
4. Clean the exterior of the hydrant and repaint if required.
5. Close auxiliary valve to isolate hydrant.
6. With hydrant isolated from line pressure, fully open and close each valve two times, or until valve stem moves freely. The valve stem
and mating components are made of corrosion resistant material. Some hard water conditions will cause deposits to accumulate.
Exercising the stem will clear the deposit.
7. Visually inspect the valve disc from the outlet nozzle opening. If damage has occurred to the disc or excessive indention is
observed, mark hydrant for follow-up repairs.
8. Close all hydrant valves, leaving the top outlet valve slightly open to allow air to vent when water is restored to the hydrant.
9. Slowly open the main supply control valve.
10. When all air has evacuated the hydrant (evidenced by water coming out of the outlet nozzle), close the hydrant outlet valve.
11. Attach a short length of hose to allow water to run onto the street, or attach a diffuser nozzle. Operate hydrant valve through one
full cycle. Repeat for each outlet nozzle. Use caution to avoid soil erosion.
12. Close each valve and tighten each nozzle cap so that the caps may not be removed by hand.
13. Ensure the auxiliary valve is fully opened.

Installation Inspection and Maintenance
1. Piping systems and valves should be 1. Valves should be inspected periodically and
thoroughly cleaned and free from ingress of should be cycled to prevent buildup of foreign
foreign materials. materials in the piping system and valve body.
2. Visually inspect the valve seating and
ports for cleanliness immediately prior to
installation.
3. All valves should be independently supported
against movement and stress from the
connected piping system.
4. Ensure that the valve pressure rating is
compatible with service conditions.
5. Operate the valve at least once from the
open to closed position.
6. Gate valves are not suitable for throttling
applications.
7. Gate valves should be installed in the vertical
position on horizontal pipework and in the
horizontal position on vertical pipework.
8. See indicator post datashet for further
installation instructions.
Operation
Gate valves are manually operated multi-turn
valves and are opened by a handwheel or
other operating device, generally in a counter
clockwise direction and then closed clockwise.
