SVC323 TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING

MODULE 01 – PRACTICAL 2

INTRODUCTION TO RAILWAY ENGINEERING

You have been tasked with the design of the new Manganese Export railway line from
Hotazel in the Northern Cape to the Port of Ngqura as part of the Pre-feasibility study
(FEL-2) that is currently out on tender by Transnet SOC. Although the project is still in its
pre-feasibility phase, the following parameters are foreseen:

 Commodity: Manganese
 Axle loading: 26 ton (adjusted from 30 ton)
 Annual tonnage: 16 MGT - initially
 Train consist: 4 x 15E Locomotives and 200 CR-13 wagons
 Line speed: 90 km/h
 Track gauge: 1 065 mm

TRACK GEOMETRY

1. As part of the project, an existing 20 ton/axle line will be upgraded. A track

inspector uses a 10 m chord to measure mid-chord ordinates in a 600 m long
curve. He obtains the following set of measurements:

{19mm, 16mm, 18mm, 17mm, 19mm, 20mm and 17mm}

Calculate the radius of the curve, assuming that the versine irregularities do not
influence his measurements significantly.

2. On the same curved section of track (#21), the track inspector obtains (by hand)
the following Gauge measurements (in mm):

{1066, 1068, 1064, 1066, 1067, 1065, 1067, 1066, 1065, 1067}

The readings were taken every 60 m.

2.1 Plot the measurements against distance

2.2 Calculate the roughness (R2) of the section
2.3 The track inspector obtains historical data from Curve #21 showing the Gauge
measurements a year ago:

{1065, 1066, 1064, 1064, 1066, 1065, 1066, 1066, 1065, 1066}

Carry out the necessary calculations to determine whether the curve was
maintained during the last year.

SUPERSTRUCTURE REQUIREMENTS

3. The client requests a basic calculation as to the difference between the deflection
caused by a static locomotive and a wagon load. For this calculation you need not
consider more than one wheel load. Use the locomotive load as suggested in
Question 1. For the wagon, assume that the maximum load will only be 26 t/axle.

You can assume the following:

• Gravitational acceleration = 9.81 m/s2
• Good formation and ballast condition
• Esteel = 205 GPa

Clearly state your assumptions with regard to the superstructure choices you are
making.

4. Calculate the maximum rail deflection in mm that would occur as a result of a

typical 4-wheel load configuration on the proposed railway line. Base your dynamic
load calculations on good track conditions and a UCL of 90%.

Assume the following:

• Gravitational acceleration = 9.81 m/s2
• Good formation and ballast condition
• Esteel = 205 GPa

Clearly state your assumptions with regard to the superstructure choices you are
making.

BONUS QUESTION:

5. How many train slots will have to be created per day if the line has an availability of
90% and the target annual export volume is maintained?
