1. FIELD OF APPLICATION

Calibrator C101F is used for adjusting, checking and verification of electrical instruments.
Characterised by high accuracy, high output power, light weight and small dimensions. Enables
generating direct (DC) and alternating (AC) voltages up to 1100V in five sub-ranges 0,1-1-10-100-
1000V, direct and alternating currents up to 20,5A in five sub-ranges 0,001-0,01-0,1-1-10A and up to
100A alternating currents in C101FC or C101FBC options. Frequency of alternating signals can be
programmed from frequency range 45,00...2000Hz.
C101 series Calibrators are manufactured in following options:
• C101F – standard source with current range up to 20,5A,
• C101FB – source with current range up to 20,5A with increased output power for 100V, 1000V
and 10A ranges,
• C101FC – source with additional 100A AC range,
• C101FBC – source with increased output power for 100V, 1000V and 10A ranges and with
additional 100A AC range.
Output signal has been set by means of keyboard placed on control board. Value of output
signal set by user is displayed on control board and on front plate of the calibrator. Frequency of
signals is displayed on control board. For facility of instruments checking, user can increase or
decrease amplitude of output signal fluently. It can be used with two different speeds. User can change
amplitude by means of jump decrease or increase with set-up deviation (the class of the instrument that
has been checked).

Instruments to be calibrated can safely be connected to the outputs without changing the set
values since the calibrator can be switched to "standby" mode to isolate the output terminals.
Standard interface RS232C enables connecting calibrator to computers and switch on it to
automatic measurement system. Entered settings (value and range) by remote interface have been
displayed on the front plate of the calibrator.
Calibrator C101 is supplying with Calpro C101 PC software for C101 calibrator control and for
direct and alternating voltage and current meter testing. Program is able to:
ƒ control of the Calibrator's C101 functions by means of computer’s keyboard and/or mouse –
computer simulation of calibrator control panel on computer’s screen,
ƒ support of analogue and digital meters tests – possibility of multiple using of earlier prepared
procedures, results tables edition with automatic error calculation of investigated instruments and
measurement’s uncertainty, data base of investigated devices creation,
ƒ graphical visualisation measurements’ results in form of tables and various charts.
Calibrator has been built in standard 19" case which is connected to control board by means of
elastic cable.

3. PRECAUTIONS

Calibrator C101F may be used in environment providing using conditions according to table
2.3, which are normally found in laboratories and factories and where apparatus will be handled
carefully. At direct near calibrator should be no salt, water and aggressive gases and lack of strong
magnetic and electric fields. Neglected operating mechanical factors during operation are allowable
according to IEC359 for instruments group I and optional operation position. Calibrator can be used in
temperature +5...+40°C, stored in temperature 0…+50°C and transported in temperature −20...+60°C.
Calibrator C101F is class I protection instrument according to EN61010-1. His metal case is
connected to protective earth lead of power cable. The control board of calibrator is III class protection
device covered insulate substance. Calibrator and control board may be used in safe and dangerous
localisation, i.e. in places whose operator can touch details conducting electrical current connected to
ground potential.
Calibrator generate on the voltage terminals high and danger voltages. Connection and
disconnection of the load should be made when "standby" function has been set ("std" lamp is on).
After switching of the load, the Calibrator can be start-up by repeat pressing of the key "std" (in
operate status "std" lamp is switched off). Switching of the load without using of "standby" status is
dangerous:
- for high voltage ranges – electric shock danger,
- for current ranges – disadvantageous for transient.
Do not open the case and adjust or exchange details during exploitation. When the Calibrator is
damaged, it should be disconnected from power supply and measurement circuit. Manufacturer
provides warranty service and after warranty service.
When the fuse beside of power supply socket is overheating, then it should be exchanged on the

Before power-up the Calibrator should be connected with the Control Board. To prevent possible
damage, ensure that power supply 230V/45…65Hz is correct. To avoid shock hazard or instrument
damage, connect the calibrator line power ground to earth ground. The connection can be made by using
the factory-supplied, three-conductor line power cord. Do not use a two -conductor extension cord; this
will break the ground connection.
After pressing of "power" key (pos.3 fig.4.1), the message "HELLO" appears on the output
display (pos.14 fig.4.1) and on the operation display of the Control Board (pos.1 fig.4.2), in spite of all
range indicators light up. After 5...10s, the Operation Display shows value "0" and "DC", "100mV"
indicators light up, the Output Display shows value "0,0000" and DC", "100mV indicators light up. The
Calibrator is in "standby", indicator described "standby" (pos.4 fig.4.1) flashes. Warming up of the
powered-up Calibrator should remain longer than 30 minutes (table 2.3). After pre-warming the
Calibrator is ready.
Attention: it is possible earlier using C101 without waiting for pre-warming time. Only result in
that case, it is crossing of permissible uncertainty according to tables 2.1 and 2.2. Remain parameters are
not changing.

5. CONNECTING OF THE LOAD TO THE CALIBRATOR

Ways of load connection meter under test to the Calibrator are presented in fig. 5.1...5.6.
Connection way of terminal "E" presented in figures is preferred.
For voltage ranges, two-wires and four-wires connection of the load to the Calibrator terminals is
possible. Two-wires connection (fig.5.1 and 5.3) is used in measurement circuits, in which does not
flowing load current. In higher precision circuits, in which the load consuming current, the four-wires
connection should be used (fig.5.2 and 5.4), what is important particularly for low ranges 100mV and 1V.
In that case the current is flowing by wires which connect load and terminals "output". However, feedback
current is flowing by wires connecting the load with "sense" terminals. That current is very low, because
input impedance of feedback circuit is higher than 10kΩ/1V.
Connection and disconnection of the load should be made when "standby" function has been set.
After switching of the load, the Calibrator can be start-up by repeat pressing of the key "standby.
Switching of the load without using of "standby" is dangerous:
- for high voltage ranges - electric shock danger,
- for current ranges - disadvantageous for transient.
Connection of the load for current ranges by way shown in fig.5.5 and by connection to "sense".
Output current is flowing-out from "V,A" terminal and is flowing-in to "com" terminal for 1mA, 10mA,
100mA and 1A ranges, but for 10A range, the output current is flowing-out "V,A" terminal and is
flowing-in to "com"-sense. Connection of the load for 100A range by way shown in fig.5.6.

6. SET UP OF THE CALIBRATOR

For setting of the Calibrator, the keyboard of the Control Board is used, which is presented in
fig.4.2 and described in Chapter 4. To enter of value, numeric keys and operation display of the
Control Board are used. To select range, special keys marked "U", "I" and "f" you can press. Pressing
of the key "E" transfers contents of the Control Board operation display to the Output Display of the
Calibrator. It is means that the Calibrator is generating signal from his output when the Calibrator is in
status "operate". When the indicator "standby" is flashing the Calibrator waiting for pressing the
"standby" key. In table 6.1, typical examples of settings are presented.

7. REMOTE INTERFACES

The Calibrator C101F is completely programmable by means of serial standard RS232C

interface from PC computer via a few meter distance. It enables connection of the Calibrator in
measurement system which contains controller (most often PC computer).
Electrical connection to the Computer is made by 9-pin plug-in connector, which is placed on
the back-plate. Description of this connector is shown in tabl.7.1. This connector is applied also to
connection with the Control Board. Before selection of the Computer interface, the Control Board
should be disconnected. For connection the Calibrator to the Computer, the cable between the
Calibrator and the Control Board can be used.

Table 7.1. Layout of contacts for connector Calibrator - Control Board ( or Computer)
Contact No Signal description
1 not connected
2 RxD - received data
3 TxD – sent data
4 DTR – shorted to contact No6
5 GND - ground
6 DSR - shorted to contact No4
7 RTS - shorted to contact No8
8 CTS - shorted to contact No7
9 +8V supply of the Control Board (generated by the Calibrator). This voltage is
protected by fuse placed beside.
Attention: application of pin 9 is not standard. For connection of the calibrator to the
Computer use cable, in which pin 9 is not connected (this way is preferred).

Transmission by serial interface running rating 4800 bit/s. Format of single character is
followed: 1 start bit, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit. All transferred data are using ASCII code and are completed
in command form whose are listed in table 7.2. Letters can be small and large. Space or comas are
ignored.
Commands are transferred to the Calibrator in command lines. Line begins STX character (02
hexadecimal), and ends by ETX character (03 hexadecimal). Maximal frame length can be 20
characters. If lines contain commands beginning this same character (for example Z0, Z5, Z7) then the
last command in the line will executed (in this case Z7). Command "O" cancels previous command
"S", which is placed in this same line and opposite. Like set up by means of the Control Board , when
user is changing from any range to range 100V and 1000V, for obtain output voltage, should be send
command "O" (Z4,N220, O), therefore transition to high voltage range implicates automatic set up of
the Calibrator in "standby" status.
Actual Calibrator status is displayed on the Output Display when it is controlled by the
Computer. However "standby" status is indicated by indicator (fig.4.1).
If command has not correct form or his execution is not possible, an error is indicated by
flashing of error number on the left side of display. Error numbers are completed in table 7.3
If error is indicated, transmission is remaining but received commands are ignored. Only "C"
and "T" commands are executed. Receiving one of them commands cancels error status. After
receiving of "C" command the Calibrator come back to power-up status. After receiving of "K"
command Output Display status is not changing. The Calibrator is sending error code to the Computer
simultaneously. This transfer to the Computer is realised in line, also with first character STX (02
hexadecimal), next error number and character ETX (03 hexadecimal) ends this line.
