Written Comprehension (20 points)

An Advice Column
1 Read the advice column. Then complete the summary of the text. (10 points)

Ask the Doctor

Dear Dr Megan,

I have a problem which started a few months ago. It’s that

I can’t stand hearing specific sounds – especially some
phone ringtones, people eating crispy foods and loud
bangs. My heart starts pounding, and if the noise
continues, I get so angry that I feel like yelling. Everyone
keeps tellling me to ignore sounds that bother me – but
I can’t! I feel so helpless! What should I do? Zoe, age 15

Dear Zoe,

Firstly, check that your hearing is normal. But what you

describe is probably a disorder called misophonia. This is
extreme sensitivity to and hatred of particular sounds. It
often begins before adulthood and is thought to affect
around 20% of people. The cause is unknown, but
researchers think it may be genetic, as it often appears in
families. Although there’s no effective treatment, many
people who suffer from it are helped by wearing earplugs
and headphones. Some people also use relaxation and
breathing exercises to cope with the anger and stress
misophonia causes, and others take anti-anxiety
medication. I recommend seeing a counsellor to discuss
the options. You should also check out websites about
misophonia and the Facebook support page. Finally, share
the information with your family and friends. It might make
them more understanding about your problem.

Dear Dr Megan,

I often have headaches, so I looked online and found that

they might be a sign of a brain tumour. I went to see my
doctor, and she advised me to do a blood test, an eye
exam and a head X-ray. When the results came back, she
said everything was normal. But I can’t stop thinking she’s
wrong. I’ve been so worried that I haven’t been able to
sleep well or concentrate in class. What other tests would
you recommend? Jonathan, age 17

Dear Jonathan,

I must first tell you that headaches rarely indicate a serious

problem. More common causes are lack of sleep,
unhealthy eating and stress. So, I don’t think you need
more tests. However, I’m concerned about your anxiety
about your health. If this continues, it can lead to you
becoming a hypochondriac. This is someone who obsesses
over minor physical problems and always thinks the worst
will happen. Some people go to doctors frequently, while
others never do because they’re afraid of what might be
discovered. Many spend hours researching symptoms
online, which makes their fears worse. Luckily, you can take

who can offer cognitive behavioural therapy. This will give
you the tools to help you change your obsessive thoughts.
Good luck!
