COMPARE: Select a City to Live In

Even if you’re pretty sure you know where you want to live as a young adult, it’s a good idea to compare different locations and
make sure you’re making the right financial decision. In this activity, you will research a city and compare it with others researched
by your classmates. Then, you will reflect on where you might choose to live as a young adult.

Part I: Research a City

Follow your teacher’s directions to determine which city you will research from the list below. Then, answer the questions to
complete the activity.

Billings, MT Daytona Beach, FL Gary, IN Madison, WI Reno, NV

Birmingham, AL Denver, CO Honolulu, HI Minneapolis, MN San Diego, CA
Boise, ID Detroit, MI Jackson, MS Nashville, TN San Francisco, CA
Boston, MA Fairbanks, AK Kalamazoo, MI New Orleans, LA Santa Fe, NM
Cedar Rapids, IA Flint, MI Las Vegas, NV Phoenix, AZ Seattle, WA
Chicago, IL Fresno, CA Lincoln, NE Portland, OR Tampa, FL

1. My City, State:

2. Using BestPlaces, search for your city and fill out Table 1 below. Some of the information will be found at the top of the page,
but some of the more detailed information will require you to use the links in the menu on the left side of the page. An
example for Palo Alto, CA has been provided in the first row of the table.

for your city to learn more about the cost of living index.)

Part II: Compare Cities
Follow your teacher’s directions to input the data you collected into a shared spreadsheet. Once your classmates have input their
data, use the spreadsheet to input the cities with the highest and lowest values into each category in Table 2.

Part III: Choose a City
Now that you’ve researched a city and seen some of the data from your classmates’ cities, it’s time to decide where you might want
to live. To make the best decision, take some time to look up any cities you’re interested in that weren’t mentioned in the activity
and/or take a closer look at some of the cities that were listed that you’d like to learn more about. Then, use the information from
your research to answer the questions.

6. Which city do you think would be the best fit for you?

7. Which data categories did you find to be most helpful in making your decision? Explain why.

8. A lot of the data we looked at has to do with the finances of living in specific cities. What non-financial factors do you think
would also be important to consider in your decision? (e.g. Being close to family and friends)
