Question 1 (30 points) .

a) You are given two vectors w = 5i + 7j − 3k and v = −3i + j + 3k.


i) Calculate the area of the parallelogram whose two adjacent sides are
defined by the vectors w and v. (2 pts)
ii) Find a unit vector perpendicular to both w and v. (2 pts)
b) Prove that the following identities
i) (A × B) · (C × D) = (A · C)(B · D) − (A · D)(B · C). (3 pts)
ii) A · (B × C) = (C × A) · B. (2 pts)
c) The position of a particle are given as a function of time t by x =
8 sin(3t), y = 8 cos(3t) and z = 24t. Find as a function of time
(i) the speed of the particle, and the tangential and normal
components of its acceleration, (5 pts)
(ii) the unit tangent vector T and curvature of the curve. (5 pts)
d) Find the area of the ellipse x = 13 cos(t), y = 3 sin(t) where 0 ≤ t ≤ 2π.
Hint: Use Green’s theorem. (3 pts)

e) If F = (5x − 2y 2)i − 7y 2j + 2z 3 k, evaluate C F.dr where C is the curve
in the xy-plane, y = x2 from (0, 0) to (3, 4). (4 pts)
f) Verify Stoke’s theorem for F = x2 zi−3yj+ xy 2z 2 k where S is the surface
of the region bounded by x = 0, y = 0, z = 0, 2x + y + 2z = 8 which
does not include the xz−plane. (4 pts)

Question 2 (20 points) .

a) A particle moves along the curve x = 3 − t + t2 , y = 2t + t2 , z =


7 − 3t − t3 where t is the time. Find the components of its velocity and
acceleration at time t = 1 in the direction of 2i − 2j + 3k. (5 pts)
b) Find the curvature and torsion of the helix given by the parametric
equations x = 12t, y = 3 sin(2t), z = 3 cos(2t). (10 pts)
c) Determine the length of the curve x = 0, y = et sin t, z = et cos t
between t = 0 and t = 5. (3 pts)
d) Find the equation of the tangent plane to the surface 4x2 + 4y 2 − z = 12
at the point (1, −2, 2). (2 pts)
Question 3 (20 points) .

a) Given F = (2x3 + 3yz)i + (2y + z)j + (x2 z + xy)k, calculate at the point
(0, −2, −1),
i) ∇.(∇ × F) (or div(Curl F)). (4 pts)
ii) ∇(∇F) (or ∇2 F). (4 pts)

d) Recall that a vector field F is solenoidal if div F = 0. Determine the
constant a so that the vector V = (5x−y)i+(2x5 z+yz−7z)j+(x−3az)k
is solenoidal. (4 pts)

Question 4 (20 points) .

a) Use Green’s Theorem toH show that the area bounded by a simple closed
curve C is given by 21 C xdy − ydx. (5 pts)

(0, 0), ( 23 π, 0) and ( 32 π, 2)

b) Verify the divergence theorem for F = 2x2 yi − 2y 2 j + 4xz 2 k taken over
the region in the first octant bounded by the circle x2 + y 2 = 9, and
x = 3. (10 pts)
c) Evaluate by changing to spherical coordinates
