Tutorial 1
Question 1.
A helium nucleus has charge +2𝑒, and neon nucleus has charge +10𝑒, where e is the fundamental
charge 1.60 × 10−19 𝐶. Find the repulsive force exerted by one on the other when the nuclei are
separated by a distance of 3.0 𝑛𝑚 in space.
Ans: 𝑭 = 𝟓. 𝟏 × 𝟏𝟎−𝟏𝟎 𝑵 = 𝟎. 𝟓𝟏 𝒏𝑵
Question 2
Three point charges are placed on the x-axis as shown in Figure 1 below. Find the net force on the
−5 𝜇𝐶 due to the other two charges.

Figure 3
Ans: In your calculation, you must be able to find two values, 𝟏. 𝟒 𝒎 𝒂𝒏𝒅 − 𝟎. 𝟏𝟕 𝒎. Use
reasoning and the laws of physics you have learnt so far to identify the correct answer
between the two values.
Question 5
In Figure 4 determine the point (other than infinity) at which the total electric field is zero. Note
that −2.5 𝜇𝐶 charge is at coordinate (0, 0) and 6.0 𝜇𝐶 charge is at coordinate (1.0 m, 0).

Ans: Again, use reasoning to find the correct position between two values 𝟏. 𝟖𝒎 and −𝟎. 𝟑𝟗𝒎
found in your calculations.
