SUBMITTING TO: DR. MAZHAR BUKHARI

Question 1:

Distinguish between hardware and software giving examples?

Hardware:

Hardware are the physical parts of a computer system that are visible and tangible.

Examples: keyboard, mouse, monitor, CPU, hard drive, RAM.

Software:

Software is a collection of instructions or programs that instruct the hardware on what

to perform. It is not tangible.

Examples: operating systems (Windows, macOS), programs (Microsoft Word, web

browsers), video games.

Describe the five major parts of a computer system along with their functions?

Input Devices:

Function: Used for entering instructions and data into the computer.

Examples: keyboard, mouse, scanner, microphone.

Central Processing Unit (CPU):

Function: The "brain" of the computer, which runs instructions and carries out
calculations.
Components: Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU), Control Unit (CU), Registers.

(RAM):

Function: Data and instruction temporary storage that is being used by the CPU.

Characteristics: Volatile (data is lost when power is switched off).

Storage Devices:

Function: Permanent storage of data and programs even when the computer is
switched off.

Examples: hard drives (HDD), solid-state drives (SSD), USB drives.

Output Devices:

Function: To show or print processed information to the user.

Examples: monitor, printer, speakers.

Explain the difference between system software and application software with two
examples of each.

System Software:

System software controls and operates the hardware of the computer and offers a
platform to execute application software.

Examples:

Operating Systems (Windows, Linux, macOS)

Utility Programs (Disk defragmenters, antivirus software)

Application Software:

Application software performs fixed tasks for the user.

Examples:

Productivity Software (Microsoft Excel, Word)

Question 2: Computer Networks (12 Marks)

Advantages and Disadvantages of LAN

Definition: Local Area Network (LAN) is a group of computers and devices linked
together in a small geographical area, e.g., an office, home, or school.

Advantages:

Resource Sharing: Enables users to share printers, files, and other resources.

High-Speed Communication: Offers fast data transfer in the network.

Disadvantages:

Geographic Limitation: Limited to a small geographic area.

Security Threats: If not configured, is prone to security attacks.

(ii) Advantages and Disadvantages of MAN (4 Marks)

Definition: Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) is a network that spans a wider

geographical area than a LAN, e.g., a city or metropolitan area.

Advantages:

Greater Coverage: Links several LANs within a city.

Faster Data Transfer: Offers quicker data transfer than WAN for city-wide applications.

Disadvantages:

Greater Cost: More costly to install and maintain than a LAN.

Greater Complexity: More difficult to manage than a LAN.

(iii) Advantages and Disadvantages of WAN

Definition: Wide Area Network (WAN) is an extensive network over a large area, e.g., a
country or the globe.

Advantages:

Global Connectivity: Links computers and networks across long distances.

Centralized Data: Enables data and resources to be centralized for businesses.

Disadvantages:

Lower Speed: Typically slower rates of data transmission than LAN or MAN.

Higher Cost and Complexity: Extremely costly and sophisticated to install and keep up.

Question 3: Microsoft Word

Describe the purpose and significance of Microsoft Word in document
preparation?

Purpose: Microsoft Word is a word processing tool employed to prepare, modify, and
present text documents.

Importance: It is needed for generating professional documents, reports, letters, and
