Midas Final Project - Humamoy - Rizaldo
Catherine S. Rizaldo
The project involves the modeling and analysis of a five-storey reinforced concrete
school building using MIDAS Gen. The structure is designed to serve educational
functions and consists of five above-ground levels, with a consistent layout across each
floor. The building is intended for educational use, falling under Occupancy Category IV,
which classifies it as an essential facility requiring enhanced design considerations for
seismic and wind loads. The entire building is composed of cast-in-place reinforced
concrete, selected for its strength, durability, and suitability for seismic and gravity load
resistance. The concrete material used is specified as ASTM(RC) with a compressive
strength of Grade C4000, ensuring adequate performance under both service and
ultimate load conditions. Various structural members are defined using solid rectangular
sections: C1 (0.5m × 0.5m) and C2 (0.4m × 0.4m) for columns, G1 (0.5m × 0.3m), G2
(0.45m × 0.3m), and G3 (0.5m × 0.3m) for girders, and B1 (0.45m × 0.25m) for beams.
These sections are consistently assigned throughout the structure to provide a regular
and efficient load path. The overall design follows national standards and reflects
appropriate material behavior, forming a stable and code-compliant system suitable for
educational use.

structure by inputting
spacing and number of
grids.
7 Building Generation Node/Element > Divide This tool breaks down
long elements into
smaller segments. It
helps improve analysis
accuracy and detail
modeling.
8 Story Data Structure > Control Data > This defines story levels
Story and assigns diaphragm
behavior. It ensures
correct vertical
segmentation for seismic
and gravity load
distribution.
9 Support (Boundary Boundary > Define Supports This tool applies
Condition) constraints at support
points such as fixed or
pinned. It defines how the
structure interacts with
the ground or foundation.
10 Static Loads Load > Static Load > Static It is used to create
load cases different types of load
cases such as dead, live,
and wind loads. These
are essential for
structural design and
analysis.
11 Mass Data Structure > Structure Type This converts the
structure’s weight into
mass for dynamic
analysis. It is necessary
for performing
earthquake load
simulations.
12 Static Load Load > Self-weight, Load > This applies all relevant
Applications Floor Load, Load > Wind vertical and lateral loads
Load, Load > Seismic Load, to the structure. It
Load > Assign Floor Load ensures the building
experiences realistic
design conditions.
13 Mass Data Structure > Structure Type This allows assigned
and Load > Loads to loads to be converted into
Masses mass. It is essential for
accurate seismic
response analysis.
14 Static Load Load > Self-weight, Load > This reuses the load tools
Application Floor Load, Load > Wind to ensure all floor and
Load, Load > Seismic Load, lateral loads are properly
Load > Assign Floor Load assigned. It verifies
consistent loading
conditions.
15 Dynamic Load (RS) Load > Dynamic Loads > This defines and applies
RS Functions and RS Load response spectrum load
Cases cases. It allows the
structure to simulate
dynamic behavior during
seismic events.
16 Eigenvalue Analysis Analysis > Eigenvalue This calculates the
natural vibration
frequencies and mode
shapes. It helps in
understanding how the
structure will respond to
dynamic loads.
17 Mass Participation Results > Vibration Mode This shows how much of
Shape the building’s mass is
engaged in each mode of
vibration. It is used to
verify dynamic response
compliance with code.
18 RS Scale Check Results > Story > Story This checks if the
Shear, RS Scaling via dynamic (RS) base shear
Seismic Load Profile and is at least 90% of the
Scale Factor static value. It ensures
seismic loads meet code
requirements.
19 Load Combination Results > Load Combination This tool automatically
> Auto Generation (ACI318- creates design load
14) combinations. It
combines static and
dynamic loads based on
the design code.
20 Reactions Results > Reactions > This displays the forces
Reaction Forces/Moments and moments at
supports. It is useful for
foundation design and
overall equilibrium
checks.
21 Deformed Shape Results > Deformations > This shows how the
Deformed Shape and structure moves or
Displacement Contour deforms under loading. It
helps detect weak zones
or excessive
displacements.
22 Beam Forces Results > Forces > Beam This tool generates shear
Diagrams and moment diagrams
along beams. It is used to
design and check
member strength.
23 Story Drift Results > Story > Story Drift This calculates the lateral
displacement between
adjacent floors. It is
important for checking
building stability and
comfort.
24 Story Force Results > Story > Story This summarizes lateral
Force, drift check manually loads resisted at each
per NSCP 2015. story level. It helps in
distributing and designing
for earthquake or wind
loads.
25 RC Design Modify Concrete Material, This sets the properties
Design Criteria for Rebar and sizes of rebars for
reinforced concrete
members. It is used to
run automated concrete
design checks.
26 Graphical Results Design > View Graphical This visually shows which
Results members pass or fail the
design. It allows for quick
identification of critical
structural elements.
27 Detailed Report Design > View Detailed This generates a full
Report or Export > Report report of inputs, analysis,
Generator. and design results.
