Clinical Learning Outcomes (Competences)

Upon completion of clinical practice in Medical rotation students are expected to be able to:
1. Conduct appropriate assessments to patients with medical conditions and use patient’s data
for planning patient care.
2. Apply pathophysiological science to differentiate the actual clinical course, sickling process
and prognosis of patients with various medical conditions.
3. Integrate nursing process and other available guidelines to plan, implement and evaluate care of
patients with various medical conditions as well as significant others
4. Apply knowledge of Clinical Pharmacology and principles of drug administration to
administer appropriate medications, monitor patients for response to medication and side
effects, and evaluate and document per clinical protocol.
5. Use available guidelines and protocols to perform emergency care to patients with medical
emergencies.
6. Integrate psychosocial, cultural, spiritual and developmental aspects to meet the needs of
patients with medical conditions.
7. Apply various recent technologies and treatment modalities in the care of patients with
medical conditions.
8. Apply national guidelines to care for patients attending clinics at the CTC, TB clinics, and
Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) clinics.
9. Use knowledge and skills of critical care as well as psychosocial, cultural and spiritual to
provide care to critical patients with medical conditions in the intensive care unit (ICU) and
their families.
10. Use nursing leadership skills to manage operations of medical wards, medical outpatient
clinics, intensive care units, CTC clinics, TB clinics and other units of the hospital.
11. Incorporate evidence-based nursing practice to provide evidence-based medical care and
identify the areas of research in the field of medical nursing
12. Teach patients and family on the appropriate nutrition, self-care and preventive measures of
the medical conditions that led to their hospitalization.

Clinical Learning Outcomes (Competences)
Upon completion of clinical practice in Surgical rotation students are expected to be able to:
1. Conduct appropriate assessments to surgical patients and use patient’s data for planning
patient care.
2. Apply pathophysiological science to differentiate the actual clinical course, sickling process
and prognosis of patients with various surgical conditions.
3. Use available guidelines and protocols to perform emergency care to casualties and other
patients under emergency conditions.
4. Use nursing process and other surgical instrumental nursing skills to provide care to patients
with conditions needing surgical interventions
5. Use nursing process and other available guidelines to manage patients with traumatic injuries and
fractures
6. Provide high quality pre, intra and post-operative care to patients undergoing surgeries.
7. Provide minor surgical interventions to patients with minor surgeries.
8. Practice and demonstrate skills of theatre nursing including the roles of scrub nurse, circulating
nurse, assistant to the surgeon and anaesthetist.
9. Apply psychosocial, cultural, spiritual and developmental aspects to meet the needs of patients
with surgical conditions and those undergoing surgeries.
10. Use knowledge and skills of critical care as well as psychosocial, cultural and spiritual to
provide care to critical patients with surgical in the ICU and their families.
11. Apply various recent technologies and treatment modalities in the care of surgical patients.
12. Demonstrate knowledge and skills of Central Sterilization and Supply Unit (CSSU) to manage
sterility of surgical equipment and supplies.
13. Use nursing leadership skills to manage operations of surgical wards, surgical clinics, operating
theatres and other surgical units of the hospital.
14. Incorporate evidence-based nursing practice to provide evidence-based surgical care and
identify the areas of research in the field of surgical nursing
15. Teach patients and family on the appropriate nutrition, self-care and preventive measures of
the surgical conditions that led to their hospitalization.

Clinical Learning Outcomes (Competences)
Upon completion of clinical practice in Paediatric rotation students are expected to be able to:
1. Apply family centred care approach to connect with the child and family and conduct
appropriate assessments to the sick child and family. Use patient’s (child) and family profile
data for planning patient care with his/her family using family centred care approach.
2. Apply psychosocial, cultural, religion, developmental and communication influence during care
of the child and family.
3. Utilize the nursing process to assess, plan and implement care of a sick new born, infants,
child in early childhood, middle childhood and adolescence.
4. Plan and implement appropriate nursing care of children with common medical and surgical
conditions.
5. Use knowledge and skills of pediatric nursing, of critical care as well as psychosocial, cultural
and spiritual principles to provide care to a neonate, child or adolescent in the neonatal
intensive care unit (NICU) and pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) respectively and their
families.
6. Apply the concepts of growth and development to assess and monitor child’s physical growth,
nutritional status and developmental milestones.
7. Provide appropriate health education and guidance to the family on child’s nutrition as linked
to physical growth, and developmental milestones.
8. Integrate the concept of family centered pediatric nursing in the care of the child in related
areas such as genetic disorders, congenital malformations and long-term illnesses.
9. Use available clinical guidelines to identify and manage paediatric emergencies.
10. Apply various recent technologies and treatment modalities in the care of paediatric patients.
11. Operate paediatric nursing care with cognizance of the legal and ethical issues pertaining to
pediatric nursing
12. Incorporate evidence-based nursing practice to practice to provide evidence-based paediatric
care and identify the areas of research in the field of pediatric nursing
13. Teach the child and his/her family on the appropriate nutrition, self-care and preventive
measures of the illness conditions that led to their hospitalization.

Clinical Learning Outcomes (Competences)

Upon completion of clinical practice in midwifery rotation students are expected to be able to:
1. Conduct appropriate assessment to pregnant women during pregnancy, labor and delivery as
well as during puerperium.
2. Demonstrate skills in planning for care of pregnant women during antenatal clinics, labor, and
delivery.
3. Use effective communication skills to provide counseling for family planning and provision of
such services to all women who seek services
4. Demonstrate high level skills in caring for normal and abnormal neonates
5. Use available guidelines and protocols to perform emergency obstetric care and to women
with gynecological care needs.
6. Use Tanzania National Family Planning Guidelines and Standards to provide family planning
services.
7. Practice and demonstrate skills of Obstetric and gynecological operating theatre nursing
including the roles of scrub nurse, circulating nurse, assistant to the surgeon and anesthetist.
8. Use national immunization program guidelines to provide immunization and vaccination to
women of reproductive age and newborns.
9. Assess patient condition for safe medication and outcomes of drug administration.

Upon completion of clinical practice in Medical rotation students are expected to be able to:
13. Conduct appropriate assessments to patients with medical conditions and use patient’s data
for planning patient care.
14. Apply pathophysiological science to differentiate the actual clinical course, sickling process
and prognosis of patients with various medical conditions.
15. Integrate nursing process and other available guidelines to plan, implement and evaluate care of
patients with various medical conditions as well as significant others
16. Apply knowledge of Clinical Pharmacology and principles of drug administration to
administer appropriate medications, monitor patients for response to medication and side
effects, and evaluate and document per clinical protocol.
17. Use available guidelines and protocols to perform emergency care to patients with medical
emergencies.
18. Integrate psychosocial, cultural, spiritual and developmental aspects to meet the needs of
patients with medical conditions.
19. Apply various recent technologies and treatment modalities in the care of patients with
medical conditions.
20. Apply national guidelines to care for patients attending clinics at the CTC, TB clinics, and
Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) clinics.
21. Use knowledge and skills of critical care as well as psychosocial, cultural and spiritual to
provide care to critical patients with medical conditions in the intensive care unit (ICU) and
their families.
22. Use nursing leadership skills to manage operations of medical wards, medical outpatient
clinics, intensive care units, CTC clinics, TB clinics and other units of the hospital.
23. Incorporate evidence-based nursing practice to provide evidence-based medical care and
identify the areas of research in the field of medical nursing
24. Teach patients and family on the appropriate nutrition, self-care and preventive measures of
the medical conditions that led to their hospitalization.

16. Conduct appropriate assessments to surgical patients and use patient’s data for planning
patient care.
17. Apply pathophysiological science to differentiate the actual clinical course, sickling process
and prognosis of patients with various surgical conditions.
18. Use available guidelines and protocols to perform emergency care to casualties and other
patients under emergency conditions.
19. Use nursing process and other surgical instrumental nursing skills to provide care to patients
with conditions needing surgical interventions
20. Use nursing process and other available guidelines to manage patients with traumatic injuries and
fractures
21. Provide high quality pre, intra and post-operative care to patients undergoing surgeries.
22. Provide minor surgical interventions to patients with minor surgeries.
23. Practice and demonstrate skills of theatre nursing including the roles of scrub nurse, circulating
nurse, assistant to the surgeon and anaesthetist.

14. Apply family centred care approach to connect with the child and family and conduct
appropriate assessments to the sick child and family. Use patient’s (child) and family profile
data for planning patient care with his/her family using family centred care approach.
15. Apply psychosocial, cultural, religion, developmental and communication influence during care
of the child and family.
16. Utilize the nursing process to assess, plan and implement care of a sick new born, infants,
child in early childhood, middle childhood and adolescence.
17. Plan and implement appropriate nursing care of children with common medical and surgical
conditions.
18. Use knowledge and skills of pediatric nursing, of critical care as well as psychosocial, cultural
and spiritual principles to provide care to a neonate, child or adolescent in the neonatal
intensive care unit (NICU) and pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) respectively and their
families.
19. Apply the concepts of growth and development to assess and monitor child’s physical growth,

Clinical Learning Outcomes (Competences)

Upon completion of clinical practice in midwifery rotation students are expected to be able to:
10. Conduct appropriate assessment to pregnant women during pregnancy, labor and delivery as
well as during puerperium.
11. Demonstrate skills in planning for care of pregnant women during antenatal clinics, labor, and
delivery.
12. Use effective communication skills to provide counseling for family planning and provision of
such services to all women who seek services
13. Demonstrate high level skills in caring for normal and abnormal neonates
14. Use available guidelines and protocols to perform emergency obstetric care and to women
with gynecological care needs.
15. Use Tanzania National Family Planning Guidelines and Standards to provide family planning
services.
16. Practice and demonstrate skills of Obstetric and gynecological operating theatre nursing
including the roles of scrub nurse, circulating nurse, assistant to the surgeon and anesthetist.
17. Use national immunization program guidelines to provide immunization and vaccination to
women of reproductive age and newborns.
18. Assess patient condition for safe medication and outcomes of drug administration.
