Complex Engineering Problem, Spring 25

Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Course Title: Communication Engineering I
Course Code: 0714311
Total Marks: 15
Complex Engineering Project Title: Design an FM Transmitter

Problem Statement: We frequently use the word frequency modulation, sometimes known as
FM, in our daily lives. In radio broadcasting and communications, FM is frequently used.
Frequency modulation is a method of encoding information on a specific signal, whether it be
analogue or digital, by changing the carrier wave frequency in accordance with the frequency
of the modulating signal. Although the approach may appear difficult, it is merely the act of
doing so. Any information or message that has to be delivered after being transformed into an
electrical signal would serve as the modulation signal in this scenario.

An FM transmitter is made up of a number of functional parts that work together to broadcast

data. Even while the parts can appear complicated to a layperson, the mechanism is actually
extremely straightforward. Depending on whether they are utilized for personal or professional
purposes, FM transmitters are employed in a range of applications. In households, personal FM
broadcasting can be found in electronic equipment, sound systems, wireless routers, or in
scientific or electrical projects in classrooms. Direct and weaker transmitters fall within this
category. A phone's memory may be used to broadcast music on FM frequencies using a
personal FM transmitter.

Design and describe an Armstrong indirect FM modulator to generate an FM carrier with a

carrier frequency of 98.1 MHz and ∆f= (40 +last two digits of your student ID) KHz. A
narrow-band FM generator with fc= 100 kHz and adjustable ∆f in the range of 10 Hz is
available. The stock room also has an oscillator with adjustable frequency in the range of 9 to
11 MHz. There are also plenty of frequency doublers, triplers and quintuplers. You have to use
at least three frequency multipliers in cascaded.

Design an FM transmitter.

Tasks:

1. System Design and Analysis: CO3 PO3 /K5/P1, P3

➢ Draw a block diagram of your Armstrong indirect FM modulator.

➢ Explain each block’s function and how it contributes to achieving the final FM signal.
➢ Choose a suitable oscillator frequency and justify your selection.
➢ Indicate how frequency mixing and filtering are used to shift frequencies to the desired
range.
➢ Analyze the problems of transmitter circuits using data for performance calculation.
2. Calculations:

Determine the required multiplication factor to achieve the final ∆f and carrier frequency
starting from the narrowband FM output. Also justify your selection of the oscillator frequency
used for mixing.

3. Simulation:

Use a simulation tool such as MATLAB/Simulink, LTspice, or Multisim to simulate the

generation of the narrowband FM signal. Verify that the final output meets the
requirements: fc = 98.1 MHz and the correct ∆f.

➢ Plots of time-domain and frequency-domain waveforms at key stages of the

modulation chain.
➢ Show Frequency spectra to show the carrier and deviation at each stage

4. Discussion:

➢ Discuss any assumptions or simplifications made.

➢ Reflect on challenges encountered during simulation and how they were addressed.
➢ Describe advantages and disadvantages.

Submission Requirements:

• A hand written report including:

o Block diagram and theoretical explanation
o Detailed calculations
o Simulation setup, results (with screenshots), and analysis
• All simulation files in appropriate format .
