1. OBJECTIVES:

1.1 To provide a means of communication of hazards and information by means of commonly


understood symbolic signs. Symbolic signs must be used wherever possible as this allows all
language groups to understand the meaning and importance of the sign.

2. STANDARDS:

2.1 Definitions
Symbolic Safety signs: means a system of communication or a gesture or action for conveying and
order.

2.2 A formal survey will be conducted to determine what symbolic signs are needed throughout the
premises. (See Doc no. BK/REG/007 for the Symbolic Safety Signs Survey.)

2.3 Legal requirements will be considered for symbolic signs during the survey.

2.4 Symbolic safety signs must be used wherever possible without the use of words for easy
recognition.

2.5 Written signs must be concise and clear and unless prescribed by legislation signs must be in
English. Notices in other languages may be used together with the English version.

2.6 Signs must be manufactured from materials, which do not deteriorate readily when exposed to
climatic elements.

2.7 All signs/notices to be located in such a manner as to be clearly and easily visible. Faded and
damaged signs or notices shall be replaced on a continuous basis.

2.8 During induction training, new employees are to be instructed as to be instructed as to the
meaning of the various signs/notices used.

2.9 All signs and notices required by the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 and it’s
regulations, will be displayed at the relevant points, as required.

2.10 Any noise or sign, which no longer applies, must be removed immediately.

2.11 Employees are to be instructed of the meaning of the various symbolic and other signs/notices
used in their Work Areas.

2.12 It is the responsibility of all employees to obey the requirements of the notices and safety signs
displayed for their information and protection.

2.13 Inspections on notices and signs are to be carried out once a month by the Safety
representative during his monthly inspection in his/her area by using the standard inspection form.

2.14 Symbolic safety signs consist of 5 basic types:

Type of Sign Description


Warning: Yellow triangle with black border with black pictogram
indicating hazard.
Restricted: Red annular ring with red diagonal line at 45˚ on
white background with a black pictogram.
Mandatory: Blue solid circle with a white pictogram.
Information (General): Green square with a white pictogram.
Information (Fire Fighting): White square with a red pictogram.

2.15 Road signs must conform to the roads ordinance of the Republic of South Africa except for
information signs, which must be white on green.

2.16 Given practical consideration to the size of the area, the following standard safety sign sizes
may be used:
 150mm x 150mm
 190mm x 190mm
 290mm x 290mm
 440mm x 440mm
 880mm x 880mm

2.17 Any deviation to the above sizes must have the approval of the Company HSE Co-ordinator.

2.18 The following notices must be posted at all substations, transformers, UPS and Battery Rooms.
a. SUBSTATIONS
Outside the substation on the door
 A notice prohibiting unauthorized persons from entering such premises.
 No entry signs
 First aid treatment signs
 Electricity warning signs
 Procedures in case of a fire

Inside the substations


 A notice prohibiting unauthorized persons from handling or interfering with electrical
machinery.
 No entry signs
 First aid treatment signs
 Electricity warning signs
 A procedure in case of a fire

b. FENCED IN TRANSFORMERS WITH LOCKABLE GATES
