The document outlines procedures for the agitation of low viscosity fluids, unsteady head flow, and gas absorption experiments. It details steps for measuring fluid dynamics, recording various readings, and adjusting parameters for different liquids and gases. The procedures include using specific equipment and techniques to ensure accurate measurements and comparisons of flow rates and gas concentrations.

AGITATION OF LOW VISCOSITY FLUIDS

PROCEDURE

Fill the tank up to a height equal to the

diameter of tank with a liquid or liquid mixture
of known density and viscosity.

Install the four baffles in the tank

Connect first type of impeller

Set the motor to lowest speed using the Variac

Record the voltage readings, amperage and force readings

Increase the speed by about 100 rpm increments

up to the maximum speed.

Record voltage, amperage, force readings, and

note significant changes in flow patterns

Repeat procedure using different type of stirrer

Remove procedure for each impeller without baffles

Vortex
formed?

Yes

Use vortex measuring device and record the

depth versus distance from tank wall

Test a second liquid or mixture of higher

viscosity. Repeat procedure

Dilute mixture using water to change the

density and viscosity
UNSTEADY HEAD FLOW

PROCEDURE

Attach exit pipe to tank opening and ensure no leaks

Fill tank and exit pipe with liquid

Start flow by releasing pipe tip cover

Record efflux time vs. liquid depth

until water reaches bottom

Repeat with different pipe lengths and orifices

GAS ABSORPTION
PROCEDURE
PART 1.A

Turn on the compressor for several minutes

Close the stopcocks at sampling ports

Is Remove tubing at the right side of

manometer manometer. Adjust with distilled
level 0? water

Set air flowrate to 0; Open sampling cocks

Adjust air flow rate at certain level

Record flowrate and differential pressure

Repeat until 8 readings each for

increasing and decreasing flowrates
PART 1.B
Ensure Reservoir is ¾ full of water
Repeat process but let air flow be decreasing

Compare results after flooding condition is obtained

Close valves and turn off the compressor and pump

PART II.

Check if the NaOH in the Hempl gas analyzer is zero

Fill reservoir tank with ¾ full of water

Start water pump, with gas and water valves

closed, to approximately 5 L/min

Start compressor and adjust air flow to 30 L/min

Open the pressure regulating valve on the CO2

tank and adjust the gas valve

Readjust the valves to maintain constant flow

rate for about 15 minutes

Open the sample cock at the top when

steady state is achieved

Adjust the three-way valves in such a way that

sample gas can be taken from the column.

Withdraw residual gas by means of the syringe, several times

Withdraw actual sample of 20 mL

Isolate cylinder and vent the cylinder. Close after 10 secs

Connect the cylinder to the absorption tube

Slowly empty the cylinder

Repeat adding and withdrawing until

the indicator level stays constant at
the original gas volume.

Check concentrations at inlet

Compare with the ratio of CO2

and air flow rates.

Repeat the procedure by adjusting the

water flow rate or the gas flow rate or the
concentration of CO2 in the inlet gas.
