Electrostatic - 1 Assignment-1 - Cbqns

The document contains a series of competency-based questions related to electric charges and fields, covering concepts such as the nature of forces between charges, effects of mediums on forces, electric field direction, and calculations involving electric flux. It includes theoretical questions, practical scenarios, and requires understanding of fundamental principles in electrostatics. The assignment encourages application of concepts through problem-solving and analysis of electric field patterns.

ELECTRIC CHARGES AND FIELD

Assignment-1 Date:
Competency Based Questions
1.Is the force acting between two-point electric charges q1 and q2 kept at some distance apart in air,
attractive or repulsive when (a) q1 q2 > 0 (b) q1 q2 < 0?
2.Two-point charges having equal charges separated by distance 1m experience a force of 8N. What will
be the force experienced by them, if they are held in water, at the same distance?
3.A proton is placed in a uniform electric field directed along the positive x-axis. In which direction will it
tend to move?
4.Which physical quantity has its S.I. unit 1). Cm ? 2). N/C ?
5.Five-point charges, each of charge +q are placed on five vertices of a regular hexagon of side ‘l’. Find
the magnitude of the resultant force on a charge –q placed at the centre of the hexagon.
6.Two identical point charges, q each, are kept 2 m apart in air. A third point charge Q of unknown
magnitude and sign is placed on the line joining the charges such that the system remains in equilibrium.
Find the position and nature of Q.
7.The given figure shows the electric field lines around three-point charges A, B and C.
(a) Which charges are positive?
(b) Which charge has the largest magnitude? Why?
(c) In which region or regions of the picture could the electric field be zero?
Justify your answer. (i) near A (ii) near B (iii) near C (iv) nowhere.
8.Sketch the electric field lines for two point charges Q1 and Q2 for Q1= Q2
and Q1> Q2 separated by a distance d.
9.Draw the pattern of electric field lines, when a point charge –Q is kept near an uncharged conducting
plate.
10.Does the charge given to a metallic sphere depend on whether it is hollow or solid? Give reason for
your answer.
11.Two identical conducting balls A and B have charges –Q and +3Q respectively. They are brought in
contact with each other and then separated by a distance d apart. Find the nature of the Coulomb force
between them.
12.Figure shows two large metal plates P1 and P2, tightly held against each other and
placed between two equal and unlike point charges perpendicular to the line joining them.
(i) What will happen to the plates when they are released? (ii) Draw the pattern of the
electric field lines for the system.
13.In the figure below, the electric field lines on the left have twice the separation of those
on the right.
(i) If the magnitude of the field of A is 40N/C, Then what force acts on
a proton at A?
(ii)What is the magnitude of the field at B?

14.How the force acting between two charges will change if the air
medium between them is replaced by metallic plate?

15.Consider two hollow concentric spheres, S1 & S2, enclosing charges 2Q &
4Q respectively as shown.
(i) Find out the ratio of the electric flux through them. (ii) how will the
electric flux through the sphere S1 change, if a medium of dielectric constant
εr is introduced in the space inside S1 in place of air?
