Objective:
Introduction to Solids Works CAD software and its interface and to learn the utilization of
different orientations/ views in the interface and Solid Works Explore.
Introduction:
The SOLIDWORKS CAD software is a mechanical design automation application that lets
designers quickly sketch out ideas, experiment with features and dimensions, and produce
models and detailed drawings. This document discusses concepts and terminology used
throughout the SOLIDWORKS application. It familiarizes you with the commonly used
functions of Sledworks and uses a 3D design approach. As you design a part, from the initial
sketch to the final result, you create a 3D model. From this model, you can create 2D
drawings or mate components consisting of parts or subassemblies to create 3D assemblies.
You can also create 2D drawings of 3D assemblies. When designing a model using
SOLIDWORKS, you can visualize it in three dimensions, the way the model exists once it is
manufactured. SOLIDWORKS is a powerful computer-aided design (CAD) software widely
used in the engineering and design industries for creating 3D models and simulations. It was
developed by Dassault Systems and is known for its user-friendly interface and robust
features. Here's an introduction to Solids Works, its components, interface, and how to
navigate through different orientations using SolidWorks Explorer;
SolidWorks Components:
There are three main components.
Part:
Represents individual 3D objects.
Building blocks for assemblies.
Examples include screws, bolts, or any standalone component.
Assembly:
Consists of multiple parts brought together.
Shows how different parts fit and interact.
Mimics the real-world assembly of components.
Drawing:
Represents 2D views of 3D models.
Used for creating detailed engineering drawings.
Includes dimensions, annotations, and other manufacturing information.
Interface Overview:
Command Manager:
Located at the top of the interface.
Contains tabs for various design functions like Sketch, Features, and Evaluate.

Feature Manager Design Tree:
On the left side.
Displays the history of the model and allows easy navigation and editing.
Graphics Area:
Main working space where you create and modify models.
Can display different views and perspectives.

PropertyManager:
On the left or right side, context-sensitive.
Provides options for editing features and dimensions.
PropertyManager
The PropertyManager is a means to set properties and other options for many
SOLIDWORKS commands. The PropertyManager appears on the PropertyManager tab in
the panel to the left of the graphics area. It opens when you select entities or commands
defined in the PropertyManager.
View Selector:
In the bottom right.
Allows quick changes between standard views and orientations.

Standard Views:
Top, Bottom, Front, Back, Left, Right.
Accessible through the View Selector.
Rotate:
Use the mouse to rotate the model.
Middle mouse button for rotation, pan, and zoom.
Orientation Dialog:
Precise control over orientation.
Accessible through View Orientation in the View Selector.

Remember that SolidWorks is a versatile tool, and proficiency grows with hands-on practice.
Experiment with creating parts, assemblies, and drawings to become more familiar with the
software and its features. Additionally, explore online tutorials and documentation provided
by SolidWorks for more in-depth learning.
