1 OUTLINE
1.1 Introduction
MEXA-584L is designed for use in auto repairs, inspections, safety checks and general engine
tune-ups, which offers a measuring range that is strictly set to the suitable levels for such
operation. It allows you to simultaneously measure concentrations of CO, HC and CO2 in
engine emission in idle states. It can also measure the air-to-fuel ratio (AFR) or excess air
ratio (l) of test engines. Light weight and compact enough, it can be fit at any work situation.
Moreover, with a clear LCD and effortless operation, it can be used as a simple measurement
instrument in other than the auto repair field.

6 MAINTENANCE
Pre-filter
-----------
The filter element should generally be replaced once approximately 50 measurements for 4-cycle
engine vehicles, or once approximately 30 measurements for 2-cycle or special typed engine vehicles
(under the basic condition where each measurement should last for 1 minute). However, the actual
replacement period depends on the maintenance conditions or the manufactured date of the automo-
tive .
• Pre-filter
• Procedure
1. Open the holder cap and take out the old element.
2. For oil catcher type:
Insert a new element into the holder in the arrow direction, with filter seals on each
side.
For P-cock type:
Put a new element to the holder cap.

sequence Is Interrupted by pressing "EXIT" key in "CHECK FLOW LINE" status, the "LEAK" error
symbol is displayed.
• If there is any leakage of the specified level or higher, the screen shows the message "CHECK

• The sequence of the leak check Is as follows:
0 seconds to 10 seconds: Pump ON (making the sampling line vacuum)
10 seconds to 15 seconds: Pump OFF (monitoring the pressure change)
15 seconds: Display the check result

*1: The following functions required by the ISO 3930/OIML R99 standard are intentionally not
equipped considering the practical operation by users.
• The instrument is not able to perform the measurement if the value at a leak check and/or
HC hang-up test exceeds the limit value.
• The instrument stops measurement when the pressure in sample gas line is too low (filter
alarm).
When such error or alarm is displayed, refer to• 6.3 Trouble Shooting • (page 50) and start
measurements after solvlng problems. ·
*2: Air-to-fuel ration (AFR) and excess air ratio (1) are calculated by the carbon balance method in
o
standard configuration. In case that an optional 2 sensor is connected, the Brettshneider
equation Is also available. Specify the eguation to be used when you order.
*3: For optional range for HC, 20000 ppmvol, display resolution is 2 ppmvol within the range of 0
ppm to 4000 ppm, and 20 ppmvol within the range of 4000 ppmvol to 20000 ppmvol.
*4: Display resolution of RPM is "1 rpm" as for the units which are delivered for India.
*5: Contact HORIBA for quotation on RS-485 connection (optional). For connection an external
PC with a communication software which supports USB port, use a RS232C/USB converter on
the market.
