PREFACE
These tables have been produced in order to provide students of Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics
with an up-to-date and consistent set of property tables and charts. The lay-out of these tables has been
modelled on the Thermodynamic Tables in SI (metric) Units, Third Edition, by R.W. Haywood.
Throughout these tables all pressures are absolute pressures. Exact numerical values are printed in bold
type.

EQUATIONS FOR SYSTEMS
Definition of a system
A system is a fixed quantity of matter.

Conservation of mass applied to a system

The mass of a system is constant, i.e.
𝑚 = 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑡.

1st Law of Thermodynamics applied to a system

When heat is transferred to, and work done by, a system are defined as positive and the system is
undergoing a cyclic process

∮ 𝑑𝑄 = ∮ 𝑑𝑊

When heat transfer to, and work done by, a system of mass m undergoing a process between state 1 and
state 2 are defined as positive and in the absence of capillarity, electric and magnetic fields

𝑄 − 𝑊 = 𝐸2 − 𝐸1 = (𝑈2 + 1⁄2 𝑚𝑐2 2 + 𝑚𝑔𝑧2 ) − (𝑈1 + 1⁄2 𝑚𝑐1 2 + 𝑚𝑔𝑧1 )

2nd Law of Thermodynamics applied to a system

When heat is transferred to a system undergoing a cyclic process is defined as positive, the Clausius
inequality is
𝑑𝑄
∮ ≤0
𝑇
When heat transfer to a system of mass m undergoing a process is defined as positive

𝒑𝒅𝒗 work for a system

When the surface of a system undergoes displacement between state 1 and state 2 and the pressure
causing the displacement is known over the entire surface that is displaced, the displacement work done
by the system during this process is

EQUATIONS FOR CONTROL VOLUMES WITH STEADY FLOW
Definition of a control volume with steady flow
A control volume is enclosed by a rigid control surface. For steady-flow, conditions within the control
volume are not, on average, changing so that the mass, momentum, energy and entropy within the
control volume remain constant.

Conservation of mass for a control volume with steady flow – the Continuity Equation
In general, the Continuity Equation may be written as

∑ 𝑚̇𝑖 = 0 or ∑ 𝑚̇𝑖𝑛 = ∑ 𝑚̇𝑜𝑢𝑡

𝑖

or, in vector form

∯ 𝜌𝑉 ∙ 𝑑𝐴 = 0
𝑐𝑠

where 𝑑𝐴 is positive out of the control volume.

Momentum equation for a control volume with steady flow – the Steady Flow Momentum Equation
(SFME)
In vector form, the SFME is

∯ 𝜌𝑉𝑉 ∙ 𝑑𝐴 = 𝐹 − ∯ 𝑝 ∙ 𝑑𝐴
𝑐𝑠 𝑐𝑠

where 𝑑𝐴 is positive out of the control volume and 𝐹 is the force on the flow due, for example, to
viscous forces and to body forces such as gravity.
In 𝑥 and 𝑦 coordinates, the SFME is

∑ 𝐹𝑥 + (∑ 𝑝𝐴) = ∑ 𝑚̇𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑉𝑥,𝑜𝑢𝑡 − ∑ 𝑚̇𝑖𝑛 𝑉𝑥,𝑖𝑛

𝑥

∑ 𝐹𝑦 + (∑ 𝑝𝐴) = ∑ 𝑚̇𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑉𝑦,𝑜𝑢𝑡 − ∑ 𝑚̇𝑖𝑛 𝑉𝑦,𝑖𝑛

𝑦

where care is needed with respect to the sign of the 𝑚̇ and 𝐴 terms.

1st Law of Thermodynamics applied to a control volume with steady flow – the Steady Flow Energy
Equation (SFEE)
When heat transfer to, and shaft work done by, the control volume are defined as positive, and in the
absence of capillarity, electric and magnetic fields, the SFEE is
1 2 1 2
𝑄̇ − 𝑊̇𝑋 = ∑ 𝑚̇𝑜𝑢𝑡 (ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑡 + 𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑡 + 𝑔𝑧𝑜𝑢𝑡 ) − ∑ 𝑚̇𝑖𝑛 (ℎ𝑖𝑛 + 𝑐𝑖𝑛 + 𝑔𝑧𝑖𝑛 )
2 2

2nd Law of Thermodynamics applied to a control volume with steady flow

When heat transfer to a control volume are defined as positive

𝑑𝑄̇
∫ ̇
+ 𝑆𝑖𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑣 = ∑ 𝑚̇𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑠𝑜𝑢𝑡 − ∑ 𝑚̇𝑖𝑛 𝑠𝑖𝑛 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 ̇

9
where 𝑑𝑄̇ is the rate of heat transfer to an area dA of the control surface at temperature T and the
̇
integration is over the whole area A of the control surface, and where 𝑆𝑖𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑣 is the rate of entropy
creation within the control volume due to irreversibilities.

†Air contains 0.93% of argon (A) and traces of other gases; these and the nitrogen together are called
atmospheric nitrogen.
Real gases are not perfect gases, and the rounded values for R, cp, cv, and cp/cv listed above do not exactly
satisfy the relationships between these quantities that would obtain for perfect gases.

Air composition:
Volumetric (and molar): 21.0% O2, 79.0% atmospheric nitrogen.
Gravimetric: 23.2% O2, 76.8% atmospheric nitrogen.

SEMI-PERFECT GASES
At low pressures, and over the temperature range quoted, the gases listed in this Table behave as semi-
perfect gases. That is, while having the molar equation of state p𝑣̅ =𝑅̅T, their specific heat capacities
are variable but are functions only of temperature.

Note: (1) The molar enthalpies listed are those in the ideal gas state at zero pressure, but the values given are
also valid at and around atmospheric pressure.
(2) In this table, the arbitrary datum state for zero enthalpy is that of the substance in the ideal gas state
at zero pressure and zero absolute temperature. (Warning: In Tables 6-12, the arbitrary datum state for H2O is
that of the saturated liquid at the triple point, at which state the internal energy and entropy are taken to be zero.)
(3) The values for atmospheric nitrogen, N2*, may be taken to be the same as for N2.

The molar enthalpies of reaction, Δℎ̃ѳ, in Table 4 are for a reference temperature of T = 298.15 K and
are virtually independent of pressure. Corresponding values of Gibbs function of reaction, Δ𝑔̃ѳ, may be
found from values of equilibrium constant Kѳ using the relation

∆𝑔̃𝜃 (= 𝑔̃𝑃𝜃 − 𝑔̃𝑅𝜃 ) = −𝑅̅ 𝑇𝑙𝑛𝐾 𝜃 (Suffixes P and R refer to products and reactants).
