Half-Yearly Examination (Online)-2021–22

Subject: English Language Maximum Marks: 40


Class: IX Time: 1 hour 15 mins.

Question-1 : Write a composition on any one of the following topics


(250-300 words) : (10)

a) Describe in detail the view from your bedroom window. Does your
room overlook a park or a busy street? What are the sights, sounds
and smells that you see, hear and experience at different times of the
day?

b) Narrate an incident from your own experience when you helped a


friend who was in trouble. Explain what happened. What did you do
to make the situation better ?

c) ‘Our forefathers were luckier than us.’ Write for or against the given
statement.

d) Write an original story that begins with the words : ‘Two friends
were passing through a dense forest, when suddenly they heard
someone screaming…….’ Give a suitable title.

e) Study the picture given below. Write a story or a description or an


account of what it suggests to you. Your composition may be about
the subject of your picture or you may take suggestions from it.
However, there must be a clear connection between the picture and
your composition.
Question-2 : Attempt any one of the following topics : (10)

a) You have been awarded a special prize at the Annual Day


Ceremony of your school. Write a letter to your friend giving him/her
the news. Be sure to include the details of the prize ceremony and
tell him/her why you have been chosen for this honour. Do not forget
to mention about your feelings for the same.

b) Write a letter to the Municipal Corporation complaining about the


dengue epidemic in your city. State the causes and suggest ways to
deal with the problem.

Question-3 : (10)

(a) Your school is conducting an Inter-House Extempore


Competition. Draft a notice to be put up on the school notice board
inviting the students of classes IX and X to take part in this event.

(b) You are the Literary Head of your school’s Student Council. On
behalf of the Principal of your school, send an invitation to the
Principal of a neighbouring school requesting him/her to judge the
aforementioned competition.

Question-4 : Grammar

(a) Join the following pairs of sentences without using and, but, so,
because : (2)
1. Do not harm anyone. Do not lie.
2. The plane was delayed. It was unusual.

(b) Re-write the following sentences according to the instructions


given. Make other changes that may be necessary, but do not change
the meaning of each sentence : (3)

3. She enquired if I knew her address. (Begin : She said …….)

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
1. Answers must be written in neat handwriting.

2. After completing the exam, the students must scan their answer
scripts and send it immediately (within 5 minutes) in PDF format by
email to their respective teachers.

3. The students should write their Name, Class, Section, Roll No. at
the top of their answer scripts.

4. They must also mention the page number at the bottom of every
page, in proper sequence.

5. The scanned copies have to be sent to the respective teachers, by


furnishing their Name, Class, Section, Roll No. and Subject, in the
subject of the mail and also the body of the answers.

6. Late submission or any other mode of sending the answers will


not be accepted.
