Course Code BCM 200

Course Title Project Planning and Control I

Course Tutor S. K. Mungai

Welcome to Project Planning and Control I. In this course we shall cover knowledge,
Introduction skills and techniques of planning and controlling implementation of construction
projects. This is meant to equip you with requisite skills and knowledge to understand
execution of construction projects.

Course Content:

(a) Introduction: Introduction to the concepts of projects, programs, portfolios,

project management, portfolio management, programme management, project
planning, project control, scheduling, project management plan and project success

(b) Project planning: The nature and purpose, guiding principles, process and
planning and control cycle. Principles of contribution to objectives, decision making,
project definition and establishment of scope. Project life cycle: Conception, design
Construction, commissioning, operation and termination; organization breakdown
structures, project team (participants) interfaces and responsibilities. Work
breakdown structures (WBS); Method statement; planning major project aspects-
Time, cost, resources, quality and risk planning.
Description
(c) Project planning Techniques: The various types e.g., Bar charts (Gantt charts) and
location time diagrams; network or arrow diagrams-critical path analysis or critical
path methods; Precedence diagram method; PERT (Program evaluation and review
technique); the line of balance techniques; Linear programming and the queuing
theory; multiple activity charts. Earned value configuration management method.
Detailed consideration of CPM application on construction projects. Modelling and
process network planning, network computations, total time critical activities and
float calculations, crash costing, resource scheduling; worked examples.

(d) Project control: Project control cycle, system, scope, principles and control
framework. Time control and its techniques. Productivity and Resources Control,
quality control and various total quality management techniques. Quality assurance
and standards.
