Children! You have learnt about the keyboard in the previous chapters. A
keyboard is an input device. It is used to input the data (enter instruction) into the
computer. A keyboard has many keys on it as shown in the given image.

Let us know the functions of keyboard keys.

Alphabet Keys

 The alphabet keys are used for typing letters, words, and sentences.
 They are marked with letters A to Z.
 They are 26 in number.

Number Keys

 The number keys are placed at the top of the alphabet keys.
 They are used to type numbers.
 They are marked with 0 to 9.

 The number keys are also present at the right side of
the keyboard. This set of keys is called
Numeric Keypad.
 Numeric Keypad has a Num Lock key.
 The Num Lock key is pressed to ON or OFF the

Special Keys
Apart from the alphabet keys and number keys, there are some
other keys on the keyboard called special keys. Let us know about
some special keys.
Spacebar Key
 The Spacebar key is the longest key on the keyboard.
 You can give space between two letters, words and numbers by pressing the
Spacebar key.

Symbols Keys Press Enter Key

Symbols keys are used to type symbols, like , [, }, +, *, & ,”, ., etc. On the keyboard
some symbols are present on number keys and some are present separately.

Caps Lock key

 The Caps Lock key is used to type letters in capital letters or uppercase. To
activate Caps Lock key, you press it once and to deactivate we press it again.

When you press Caps Lock key its light turns ON which indicates that Caps Lock
key is ON. Opt. Show three light indicators of the keyboard and show Caps lock

1. To type the symbols which are present at the top of number keys or other

Ctrl Key

The Ctrl (Control) key is used with CTRL key

Draw an image of the keyboard on a chart paper. Color different keys with various
colors. Also, label the various types of keys on it. Show the project to your
teacher.

Teacher’s Notes
 Take the students to the lab and show them keyboard and explain the
functions of various keys.
 Demonstrate how cursor can be moved from one line to another by using
arrows keys and navigation keys.
