REV 2 CHENNAI - 600043.
During normal operation the differential current in the scheme should be zero or negligible. Any abnormality is
detected via a given threshold ID>1. This element is using for CT supervision. Recommended setting should be
more than 2 % of maximum CT ratio and less than “Minimum Loaded feeder Current”. Recommended setting is
greater than 32 A (2% CTR) & less than Min loaded feeder current (262.44 A) 40 A. (NOTE : IF THE SPILL
CURRENT IS MORE THAN 40 A SHALL BE ADJUSTED AT SITE ACCORDINGLY)
Note: As per NTPC requirements ID>1 settings during night to be adopted considering the minimum load
current which shall be 0 (zero) during night since being a Solar PV plant. Hence same to be discussed with
NTPC & set accordingly based on operational requirements.
2. Slope k1 setting range is from 0% to 50%. Recommended setting is 0% , as the minimum loading current is
very less.

3. Slope k2 setting range is from 20% to 90%, and recommendation is 65% to provide stability for through faults.

A trip is only permitted if this differential current exceeds the set slope of the bias characteristic. Recommended
value for normal application is 65%.
4. Slope KCZ setting range is from 0% to 90%, it should be less than Icc min (1 bar) / (((Independent bar - 1) x
IloadMax (1 bar)) + Icc min (1 bar)).
Recommended setting is 30%.
5.ID>2 (from 0.5 to 30 A (secondary value)) as low as possible
The main differential current element of MiCOM P741 will only be able to operate if the differential current reaches a
threshold ID>2. In general, this setting will be adjusted above highest normal full load current in order to avoid mal
operation even max loaded feeder CT fails. Normally recommended setting is more than 110 -180% of max load
level. We shall choose ID>2, more than max loading (high instantaneous loading). Recommended setting is 120%
of Maximum CT Ratio = 1.2 * 1600 = 1920A
6.ID>1 Alarm Timer (from 100ms to 600 s) shall be greater than the longest protection time (such as line, over

1.2 The Transformer Differential protection relay MiCOM P642 has the following parameters for setting:
1) Minimum differential threshold of the low set differential characteristic., Is1. (Operate value of the
differential protection function as referred to the secondary current of the relevant transformer end).
2) First slope setting of the low set differential characteristic., k1. (Gradient of the tripping characteristic of
differential protection in the range).
3) Second slope setting of the low set differential characteristic., k2. (Gradient of the tripping characteristic of
differential protection in the range).
4) Bias current threshold for the second slope of the low set differential characteristic. Is2. (This setting
defines the second knee of the tripping characteristic. Above this knee, the gradient is k2).
5) Threshold value of the differential current for deactivation of the inrush stabilization function (harmonic
restraint) and of the overfluxing restraint, Is-HS1. (If the threshold is set too high, it is possible for the P64x not
to trip in the presence of internal faults with transformer saturation).

6) Threshold value of the differential current for tripping by the differential protection function independent of
restraining variable, harmonic restraint, overfluxing restraint and saturation detector, Is-HS2. (If the threshold
is set too low, the P64x can trip in the presence of external faults with transformer saturation).

The following setting in the MiCOM P642 relay is recommended as below:
Settings:
Trans Diff = Enabled
Set Mote = Advanced
Is1 = 0.2 PU
k1 = 0.3
k2 = 0.8
Is2 = 1.5 PU
Is-HS1 = 6.67 PU
Is-HS2 = 8.00 PU
Reactance = 15.00%
Vector Group = 0
Transient Bias = Disabled
Zero Seq filt HV = Enabled
Zero Seq filt LV = Enabled
Ih (2)%> = 10%
Note : As per customer comment on Rev 0 settings, the 2nd Harmonic blocking during inrush to be
adjusted as per actual during commissioning
Cross blocking = Disabled
CT Saturation = Disabled
No Gap = Disabled
5th harm blocked = Enabled
Ih (5)%> = 20%
Circuitry Fail = Disabled
Note : As per customer comment on Rev 1 settings, Transformer is going to get charged from 220kV
side while there are no Inverters in circuit. Inverter can inject maximum harmonic currents with THD <
5% when transformers are already charged and in service. Hence no specific settings of harmonics
envisaged on account of Inverters.
1.3 The stability check is performed for the following cases :-
A. The 100 MVA Transformer is fully loaded at -10% tap.
B. The 100 MVA Transformer is fully loaded at +10% tap.
C. The 100 MVA Transformer through fault stability at -10% tap at 33 kV side.
D. The 100 MVA Transformer through fault stability at +10% tap at 33kV side.
1.4 A. Stability of 100 MVA Transformer at full load and under operation at -10% Tap:

= 100*10^3/(√3*198)
Transformer HV side current at -10% tap in Amps
= 291.60
= 291.6/400
Equivalent secondary current of HV side in Amps
= 0.729
= 0.729*1.525
HV side current in Iref Amps
= 1.120
= 100*10^3/(√3*33)
Transformer LV side current in Amps

= 0.119
= |(HV + LV current)|/2
Restraining Current IR in Amps = (1.12+1.001)/2
= 1.061
Considering the above referred setting the operating current calculation:
The differential current = 0.119 A and the Bias Current = 1.061 A
The Differential current required for the relay to operate = k1*Ibias
For M/s. NTPC /HITACHI ABB M/s. GE T&D INDIA LIMITED
100MVA TRANSFORMER PROTECTION, 19/1, GST ROAD
Rev 2 PALLAVARAM, CHENNAI-600043
The differential current required for the relay to operate in = 0.3*1.061

= 0.915
= 100*10^3/(√3*33)
Transformer LV side current in Amps
= 1749.550
= (1749.55/2500)*1
Equivalent secondary current of LV in Amps
= 0.70
= 0.7*1.429
LV side current in Iref Amps
= 1.001
= |HV current - LVcurrent|
Differential current Idiff> in Amps = |0.915-1.001|
= 0.086
= |(HV + LV currents)|/2
Restraining Current IR in Amps = (0.915+1.001)/2
= 0.958
Considering the above referred setting the operating current calculation:
The differential current = 0.086 A and the Bias Current = 0.958 A
The Differential current required for the relay to operate = k1 * Bias Current
The differential current required for the relay to operate in = 0.3*0.958
Amps = 0.288
As the restraining current is 0.958 A, and the differential current is 0.086 A the operating point lies below the
characteristic curve.

= (11663.71/2500)*1
Equivalent secondary current of LV in Amps
= 4.67
= 4.67*1.429
LV side current in Iref Amps
= 6.67
= |HV current - LV current|
Differential current Idiff> in Amps = |8.68 - 7.84|
= 0.75
= |(HV + LVcurrents)|/2
Restraining Current IR in Amps = (8.68 +7.84) / 2
= 7.05
Considering the above referred setting the operating current calculation:
The differential current = 0.75 A and the Bias Current = 7.05 A
The Differential current required for the relay to operate = k1* Is2+k2*(Ibias-Is2)

For M/s. NTPC /HITACHI ABB M/s. GE T&D INDIA LIMITED

100MVA TRANSFORMER PROTECTION, 19/1, GST ROAD
Rev 2 PALLAVARAM, CHENNAI-600043
The differential current required for the relay to operate in = (0.3*1.5)+(0.8*(7.05-1.5))
Amps = 4.89
As the restraining current is 7.05 A, and the differential current is 0.75 A the operating point lies below the

= 4.67
= 4.67*1.429
LV side current in Iref Amps
= 6.67
= |HV current - LV current|
Differential current Idiff> in Amps = |7.44 - 7.84|
= 0.60
= |(HV + LVcurrents)|/2
Restraining Current IR in Amps = (7.44 + 7.84) / 2
= 6.37
Considering the above referred setting the operating current calculation:
The differential current = 0.60 A and the Bias Current = 6.37 A
The Differential current required for the relay to operate = k1* Is2+k2*(Ibias-Is2)
The differential current required for the relay to operate in = (0.3*1.5)+(0.8*(6.37-1.5))

charging conditions and also should be sensitive for the internal faults. This is the basic differential current
setting which determines the minimum pick-up level of the relay. The value of this setting should also be in
excess of any mismatch between line ends. Here the capacitive charging compensation has been enabled,
the charging current derived from the susceptance can be compensated in the relay .

1. INTRODUCTION
M/s Adani Renewable Energy (RJ) Ltd. is developing 296MW AC, Solar power plant at
Fatehgarh solar farm, Rajasthan. The plant is having inverters supplied by HUAWEI. The
CPSU phase-II ( 296 MW) envisages a 220 KV AIS Switchyard with provisions for 5 Nos. of
220 KV line bays in generation switchyard for power evacuation.
The DC Power generated from the solar plant will be converted to AC power through
inverter with 800V output and then same 800V AC power will be stepped up to 33kV via
0.8/33kV inverter transformers.
The power generated from solar plant will be evacuated to 220kV Delivery Point via three
numbers of 33/220kV 100MVA power transformers.

In this report relay coordination is carried out and the relay protection settings are
provided for the 33kV and 220kV network of 296 MW Solar PV plant.

3. METHODOLOGY
The methodology followed for the relay coordination of the PV plant is as follows:
a. The basic parameters of relay coordination are as follows:
Pick-up Settings :
Project Consultant
Relay Coordination and Protection Settings study for
296MW Fatehgarh NTPC Solar farm
Contract MSL/GE/E/SO/SK/23/20
Agreement Dated 11.06.2020

Pick-up setting is the minimum current setting which will activate the relay
operation.
IDMT Operating Curve :
Inverse definite minimum time (IDMT) curves are time vs current curves
which defines the operating time for a set of current and TMS value. Based on
the application and coordination the curves shall be selected. standered
Invers, Vary Inverse, Extremely Inverse, etc. are examples for operating curves.
Time Multiplier Setting (TMS):
TMS is the settings which specifies the relay tripping time (for IDMT curves)
based on Pick-up settings, relay sensing fault current and operating curve.
Time Delay :
This is the time for which the relay waits to give the trip command to breaker
after picking up for Definite Time curve.
b. Phase over current protection settings (Stage-1):
• The Over current pick-up settings for the feeder relays is provided as 1.1 times of
the load current of individual feeders and same is mentioned in Table - 2 below.
• The main 33kV switchgear bus coupler and out going feeders pick-up settings are
calculated by considering 1.1 times of 100MVA transfomer LV side rated current.
• The pick-up settings of Over current protection settings (Stage-1) calculation of
different feeders are as follows:

• The TMS settings for the IDMT relays (stage-1) are provided as per the coordination
with the downstream relay and thermal capabilities of the protected equipments
like transformers and cables.
c. Phase Instantaneous Over current protection settings (Stage-2):
• The instantaneous settings of the transformer primary relay is considered
maximum value of 1.3 times of the through fault current or 1.2 times of the Inrush
current of the transformer and the delay is selected as 50ms as this is the
downstream relay for 220kV maximum fault current.

• Step 2: Settings for Inverter Transformer Primary side relay

CT ratio - 150/1, Maximum Phase fault current – 15.14 kA
Stage-1 Settings:
Pick-up Setting: Settings are considered as 1.2 times of the transformer rated current.
6.4MVA Trafo full load current - 112A
110% of full load current - 123.2 A
Pick-up settings with 150/1 CT ratio - 123.2 / 150 = 0.82 In.
Curve Type: The relay operating curve is considered as Very Inverse to
coordinate with MCCB settings
TMS Settings: TMS settings are calculated by considering the CTI of 100ms at
Inst. Settings of MCCB with Tsd (0.1s).
So the relay operating time - 200 ms (100+100ms)
Fault current - 1.1*700 + 56*1.25 =840A
TMS for VI curve - 0.2*[(840/(150*0.82))-1]/ 13.5
- 0.086,
- time of operation is 200ms.
Stage-2 Settings:
Pick-up Setting: Settings are considered as 1.3 times of the trafo through fault current
Max through fault current - 699A on 33kV side
130% of through fault current - 900 A

Stage-1 Settings:
Pick-up Setting: Settings are considered as 1.2 times of full load current.
Maximum full load current - 448 A
110% of full load current - 492.8 A
Pick-up settings with 600/1 CT ratio- 492.8 / 600 = 0.82 In.
Curve Type: The relay operating curve is considered as Normal Inverse.
TMS Settings: TMS settings are calculated by considering the CTI of 150ms
at 20 time of Pick-up current (20*0.9*600 A) as the maximum
fault current is more than the 20 times of Pick-up current and after
20 time of Pick-up current operating curve will be saturated.
So the relay operating time - 200 ms (150ms+50ms)
Fault current - 20*0.9*600 A = 10800 A.
TMS for NI curve - 0.20*[(10800/(600*0.82))^0.02-1]/ 0.14
- 0.091,
