Experiment No 1

The document outlines a practical group assignment for the Power Electronics Circuits course at Mbeya University, focusing on the simulation of a single-phase fully controlled bridge converter with RL loads. It details the experiment's aim, required apparatus, procedures for using MATLAB/Simulink, and includes a table for recording various parameters and results. Additionally, it poses pre-lab questions and emphasizes the need for a typed report and presentation by the submission deadline of May 13, 2024.

EXPERIMENT No. 1: SIMULATION OF SINGLE-PHASE FULLY CONTROLLED
BRIDGE CONVERTER WITH RL LOADS

1.0 AIM OF THE EXPERIMENT

To study the single phase fully controlled bridge converter with R & RL Load.

1.1 APPARATUS

S/No Equipment
1 Personal computer with MATLAB/Simulink

CIRCUIT DIAGRAM

Figure 1. Power circuit

1.2 THEORY

Write down the theory of the operation of the single phase fully controlled bridge converter and
the expected results (theoretical results)

1.3 PROCEDURES

1. On your PC, open the MATLAB software and open a new window of Simulink
2. In the Simulink draw the power circuit as shown in figure 1
3. Design a control circuit that will give proper switching signals at a switching frequency of
50Hz
4. Connect current and voltage measurements to measure the load current and voltage
respectively,
5. Connect the output of the current and voltage measurement to the same oscilloscope
6. Set the input voltage as AC 30V and var as shown on the tabular form
7. By varying the firing angle gradually up to 180o, observe the related waveforms.
8. Tabulate all readings for various firing angles.
9. For given load parameters in case 3, Connect the thyristor current and voltage measurement
to the same oscilloscope
10. Vary the load parameters as in Table 1.

1.5. PRE-LAB VIVA QUESTIONS

1. What will happen if the firing angle than 90 degrees?

2. What are the performance parameters of a rectifier?
3. What is the difference between a half-wave and full-wave rectifier?

1.5. PRE-LAB VIVA QUESTIONS

1. If the firing angle is greater than 90 degrees, what will happen?

2. What are the performance parameters of a rectifier?

1.6 RESULTS

Give out the graphs of the results obtained as in the procedures above including the switching
signals.

1.6 DISCUSSION

Discuss the results obtained in this experiment.
