CO1: Explain the concept of probability and Random Variable


CO2: Explain the concept of distribution functions, densities and probability distributions; illustrate discrete and
continuous probability distributions.
CO3: Describe the concept of moments, skewness and Kurtosis; evaluate correlation and regression – Rank
correlation; discuss bivariate distributions and their properties
CO4: Discuss the basic of Curve fitting by the method of least squares; evaluate straight lines, second degree
parabolas and more general curves.
CO5: Describe and use the concepts test of significance: Large sample test for single proportion, difference of
proportions; calculate single mean, difference of means, and difference of standard deviations.
CO6: Explain the basic concepts of tests of small samples- Student’s T test, Chi-square test for goodness of fit,
and evaluate the result

1. A card is drawn at random from a well shuffled pack of 52 cards. What is the CO1 4 K1
probability that it is (i) and ace (ii) a diamond card.

8. In a simple random sample 600 men taken from a big city 400 are found to CO4 4 K3
be smokers. In another simple random sample of 900 men taken from another
city 450 are smokers. Do the data indicate that there is a significant difference
in the habit of smoking in the two cities?
9. The manufacturer of a certain make of electric bulbs claims that his bulbs CO5 4 K2
have a mean life of 25 months with a standard deviation of 5 months. A
random sample of 6 such bulbs gave the following values.
Life of months 24, 26, 30, 20, 20, 18.
Can you regard the producer’s claim to be valid at 1 % level of significance?

10. How many pairs of observations must be included in a sample in order that CO5 4 K3

are defective. A random sample of 600 apples contained 36 defective

13. (a) A random sample of 90 poultry farms of one variety gave an average CO5 6 K4
production of 240 eggs per bird/year with a S.D. of 18 eggs. Another
random sample of 60 poultry farms of another variety gave an average
production of 195 eggs per bird/year with a S.D. of 15 eggs. Distinguish
between two varieties of birds with respect to their egg production?

16. (a) Two working designs are under consideration for adoption in a plant. A CO5 10 K4/K5
time and motion study shows that 12 workers using design A have a mean
assembly time of 300 seconds with a standard deviation of 12 seconds and
that 15 workers using design B have a mean assembly time of 335 seconds
with a standard deviation of 15 seconds. Is the difference in the mean
assembly time between the two working designs significant at one percent
level of significance? The following table gives some t-values which may
be used?
