Q1- The SCR has V{g} - I{g} characteristics given as V{g} = 1.5 + 8I{g} .In a certain configuration, the gate
voltage consists pulses of 12 V and of duration 50ms with duty cycle of 0.2.
a) Find the value of R series resistor in gate circuit to limit peak power dissipation in the gate circuit to 5 W.
b) Calculate the average power dissipation in the gate circuit.

Q2- A DC supply of 100 V feeds a load resistance of 10 ohm and an inductance of 5 H through a thyristor. The
latching current of thyristor is 50 mA. Find the minimum width of the gate pulse.
Q3- A power transistor has its switching waveforms as shown in figure blew. If the average power loss in the
transistor is limited to 300 W, find the switching frequency at which this transistor can be operated.

Q-1 . A thyristor string is formed by the series and parallel connections of thyristors. The voltage and current
ratings of the string are 6 kV, and 4 kA respectively. Available thyristors have the voltage and current ratings of
1.2 kV and 1 kA, respectively. The string efficiency is 90% for both the series and parallel connections. Calculate
the number of thyristors to be connected in series and parallel

Q-2. Calculate the number of the thyristor with a rating of 400 V and 95 A require in each branch of a series
parallel combination for a circuit with total voltage and current rating of 11 kV and 1.7 kA respectively . Assume
a derating factor of 16%.

Q-3. A dc source of 100 volts supplies a purely inductive load of 0.1 H; the controller is an SCR in series with
source and load. If the specified latching current 100 mA, then the minimum width of the gating pulse to ensure
turn-on of SCR would be

Q-4. For an SCR , the gate cathode characteristics has a straight -line slope of 130. For trigger source voltage of
20 V and allowable gate power dissipation of 0.5 Watts , what the gate source resistance ?

Q-5. A thyristor has internal power dissipation of 40 W and is operated at an ambient temperature of 20°C . If
thermal resistance is 1.6° C/W, the junction temperature is ,

Q-6. For an SCR, gate-cathode characteristic is given by V= 1+10 I. Gate source voltage is a rectangular pulse of
15 V with 20 µ sec duration. For an average gate power dissipation of 0.3 W and a peak gate drive power of 5 W,
compute (a) the resistance to be connected in series with the SCR gate, (b) the triggering frequency and (c) the
duty cycle of the triggering pulse.

Q-7 The string of 4 series connected SCRs has static and dynamic equalizing circuit. The string has to stand with
to voltage of 10kV. The static equalizing resistance is 25000Ω and dynamic equaling circuit is Rc =
40Ω ,C=0.08µF. The leakage currents are 21 mA , 25 mA , and 18mA and 16mA respectively . Determine the
voltage across SCR IN off condition and discharge current of each capacitor at the time of turn on.

Q-8.The specification sheet for an SCR gives maximum rms on-state current as 35 A. If this SCR is used in a
resistive circuit, compute average on-state current rating for half-sine wave current for conduction angles of (a)
180° (b) 90° and (c) 30°.

Q-9.An SCR has half-cycle surge current rating of 3000 A for 50 Hz supply. Calculate its one-cycle surge current
rating and I2t rating.

Q-10.It is required to operate 250-A SCR in parallel with 350-A SCR with their respective on-state voltage drops
of 1.6 V and 1.2 V. Calculate the value of resistance to be inserted in series with each SCR so that they share the
total load of 600 A in proportion to their current ratings.

Q-11. The source voltages 100V and the load resistance is 10Ω . The SCR can with stand a dv/dt value of 50V/µ
sec. if the snubber discharge current must be limited to 2Amp . find the value of the snubber resistor and capacitor .
Q-12. The specified di/dt for the thyristor in fig is 50 Amp/ µsec and the inductance L is include in the circuit for
the purpose of protecting the thyristor from the damage due to excessive di/dt. find approximately the minimum
value of L required.

Q-13. . A step-up chopper has input voltage of 220 V and output voltage of 660 V. If the non-conducting time of
thyristor-chopper is 100 µs, compute the pulse width of output voltage. or In case pulse width is halved for constant
frequency operation, find the new output voltage.

Q-14. For type-A chopper circuit, source voltage V, = 220 V, chopping period T = 2000 µs, on-period = 600 µs,
load circuit parameters: R = 1Q, L = 5 mH and E = 24 V. (a) Find whether load current is continuous or not. (b)
Calculate the value of average output current. (c) Compute the maximum and minimum values of steady state
output current. (d) Sketch the time variations of gate signal i,load voltage vo, load current i,thyristor.

Q-15. An RLE load is operating in a chopper circuit from a 500-volts dc source. For the load, L = 0.06 H and R =
0. For a duty cycle of 0.2, find the chopping frequency to limit the amplitude of load current excursion to 10 A.

Q1). A single phase half wave controlled converter feeds power to RLE load with R=5 ohms, L= 10 mH , E = 20
volts , the source voltage is 230 volts , for continuous condition, find the average value of load current for firing
angle of 45degree in case one of four SCRs gets open circuited, find the new value of average current assuming
continuous output current .

Q2). A single phase fully controlled bridge circuit shown in figure is used for obtaining a regulated dc output
voltage. The rms value of the AC input voltage is 230 V, and the firing angle is maintained at 60 degrees, so that
the load current is 4 ampere .
i) Calculate the dc output voltage and the active and reactive power input.
ii) Calculate the dc output voltage and the active and reactive power input if a freewheeling diode is used at the
output. Assuming that the load resistance remains the same and the firing angle is, maintained at 60 degree.

Q3). A single phase half wave rectifier of given fig. has L =6.5 mH , R=2.5Ω and E=10V .If the average output
voltage is 25% of the maximum possible average output voltage and the input voltage is Vs = 120V at 60 Hz .
i) Determine the steady load current Io at ꞷt = 0,
ii). Determine the average diode current Id .
iii) Determine the rms diode current .
iv) the rms output current.
v) the input power factor and vi) firing angle
Q4). A 3 phase bridge rectifier has a purely resistive load of R. Determine
i) The efficiency
ii) The form factor (FF)
iii) The ripple factor (RF)
iv) The peak inverse voltage of each diode.
v) The peak current through a diode .
The rectifier delivers I(dc ) = 60 A at an output voltage of Vdc = 280.7 V and the source frequency is 60 Hz .

Q6).A single phase full wave bridge rectifiers supplying the power to the load of R= 5Ω , L=10m H , and E=50V.
The supply voltage is 200V , 50 Hz at a firing angle of 60 degrees . Determine i) Avg output voltage and current ,
ii) rms value of fundamental source current ,iii) Displacement angle , iv) Input power factor , v) circuit turn off
time.

Q7). A 3 phase half wave controlled converter is connected to a 380 V (line supply) . Load current is constant at
32 A and is independent of firing angle.
Find the average voltage at firing angle 0 degree and 45 degree , given that the thyristors have a forward voltage
drop of 1.2 V . What value of current and PIV rating will the thyristor require and what will be the average power
dissipation in each thyristor .

Q8). A single phase semi converter is operated from 120 V, 50 Hz ac supply . The load resistance is 10 Ω. If the
average output voltage is 25 % of the maximum possible average output voltage , determine i) Firing angle ii)RMS
and average output current.

Q9). A 3 phase fully controlled rectifier is connected to the ac supply of 400V , 50 Hz and delay angle of 45
degree. Load voltage is 360 V and load current is constant at 10 A . Compute source inductance and load resistance.

1. A single phase voltage controller has input voltage of 230 V, 50 Hz and a load of R = 15Ω.For 6 cycle on
and 4 cycle off, determine
a. RMS output voltage,

c. Average and RMS thyristor currents
2. A single-phase AC voltage controller of figure given below feeds power to a resistive load of 40 from
230 V, 50 Hz source. Determine and draw the voltage suitable wave diagram of following:
a. The RMS output and current for any firing angle α.
b. The peak values of average and RMS thyristor currents for any.
firing angle α.
c. The minimum circuit turn-off time for any firing angle α.

3. 3. A two-stage sequence controlled single-phase ac voltage controller is feeding a load of R = 102. The
source voltage is 220 V 50 Hz, and the turns ratio from primary to each transformer secondary is unity.
For two-stage sequence control, the firing angle of upper thyristors is 45 deg .Calculate
a) RMS value of output voltage
b) RMS value of current for upper thyristors
c) RMS value of current for lower thyristors.
4. A single-phase bridge-type cycloconverter has an input voltage of 230 V, 50 Hz and a load of R = 10 Ω.
The output frequency is one-third of the input frequency. For a firing angle delay of 30° calculate
a) the RMS value of output voltage
b) RMS current of each converter
c) RMS current of each thyristor
5. A 3-phase to single-phase cycloconverter employs 3-pulse positive and negative group converters. Each
converter is supplied from delta/star transformer with per phase turns ratio of 2: 1. The supply voltage is
400 V, 50 Hz. The RL load has R = 2 2 and at low output frequency, L = 1.5 2. In order to account for
commutation overlap and thyristor turn-off time, the firing angle in the inversion mode should not exceed
160°. Compute-
a) the value of the fundamental rms output voltage,
b) rms output current and
c) output power.
6. An integral cycle ac the voltage controller is feeding a purely resistive circuit from a single-phase ac
voltage source. The current waveform consists alternately burst of N-complete cycle of conduction
followed by M-complete of extinction. The RMS value of the load voltage is half the RMS value of the
supply voltage .
7. A 1-Phase halfwave ac voltage controller has an input voltage of 230V, 50 Hz and a load resistance of
102. The firing angle of the thyristor is 90° in each positive half cycle. Find:

1. A single phase bridge inverter feeds power to a load of R = 12 ohm and L = 0.03 H from a 400 V DC
source. If the inverter operates at a frequency of 50 Hz, determine the power delivered to load for

2. A three-phase bridge inverter delivers power to a resistive load from a 450 V source. For a star-
connected load of 10 ohms per phase, determine for both (a) 180° mode and (b) 1200 mode,

3. single-phase auto-sequential commutated CSI is fed from 220 V dc source. The load is R = 10 ohms
Thyristors have turn-off time of 20 µs and inverter output frequency is 50 Hz. Take a factor of safety
of 2. Determine suitable value of source inductance assuming a maximum current change of 0.5 A in
one cycle. Neglect all losses. Find also the values of commutating capacitors.

4. Calculate the output frequency of a series inverter with the following parameters: Inductance L = 6mH
capacitance C = 1.2 microfarad, load resistance R = 100 ohms, Toff=0.2 ms If the load resistance is
varied from 40 to 140 ohms, find out the range of output frequency.
5. A single-phase bridge inverter delivers power to a series connected RLC load with R = 2 Ω and wL =
10 Ω. The periodic time T = 0.1 msec.
What value of C should the load have in order to obtain load commutation for the SCRs. The thyristor
turn-off time is 10 microsec. Take circuit turn off time as 1.5 tq. Assume that load current contains only
fundamental component.
6. A single-phase voltage source inverter is controlled in a single pulse-width modulated mode with a
pulse width of 1500 in each half cycle. Total harmonic distortion is defined as THD=√(V2rms-V1
2)/V1*100 Where V1 is the rms value of the fundamental component of output voltage.
