Cisco Packet Mine

The document outlines a lab report on building a simple network using Cisco Packet Tracer, detailing the components involved, including hosts, switches, and routers. The author, Zelalem Birhanu, describes the step-by-step process of setting up the network, configuring IP addresses, and testing connectivity using the ping utility. The report concludes with observations on the successful establishment of the network and the active connection between devices.

Title: Building a Simple Network

Name: Zelalem Birhanu

ID: ATR/0004/09

Submission date: October19,2019 G.C
Introduction/Purpose
In this lab I saw about the networking components and
cabling.
Networks are constructed of three major components. These
are hosts, switches and routers. In this lab I built a simple
network with two hosts and a switch. I applied IP addressing
for this lab to the PCs to enable communication between
these two devices. I also used the ping utility for verifying
connectivity.

1
Materials/Components and Equipment
Cisco Packet Tracer 7.2.2

2
Methods/Procedure
Step 1: Packet Tracer was downloaded and installed on the computer.

Step 2: I opened it and started to build a simple network.

Step 3: Choosing Devices and Connections

1: Single click on End Devices and I added two generic hosts (PCs) by
dragging them to the work area.

2: Single click on Intermediate Devices and I added a switch by

dragging it to the work area.
3: I clicked Connections to select the correct cable.
4: I clicked PC-A >FastEthernet0 and then clicked S1
>FastEthernet0/6.

5: Another correct cable was selected.

6: I clicked PC-B >FastEthernet0 and then clicked S1

>FastEthernet0/1.

Step 4: Configuring Static IP Address information on the PCs.

1: I clicked PC-A >Config >FastEthernet0.

2: In the IP Configuration, I typed in the IP address 192.168.1.10 and
the subnet mask 255.255.255.0
3: After all the IP configuration has been entered, I clicked the X at
the top right corner. Then the Config window was closed and the
information entered was saved.

4: The previous steps were repeated for entering the IP address

information on PC-B. I changed the IP address and I typed in the IP
address 192.168.1.11 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0

3
Step 5: Testing the Network

I used the command prompt to verify the PC settings and connectivity.

1: I clicked PC-A >Desktop >Command Prompt.

2: I typed in the ipconfig command.

3: I typed ping 192.168.1.11 and I press Enter key.

4
Discussion/Analysis
Question 1: Besides bandwidth and latency, what other parameter is
needed to give a good characterization of the quality of service offered
by a network used for

(i) Digitized voice traffic

(ii) Video traffic?
(iii) Financial transaction traffic?

ANS:

(I) Digitized voice traffic: it require the parameter other than

the bandwidth and latency the real time delivery of the
data with high throughput.

(II) Video traffic: the video codec (MPEG4, H261, H263, H264 & H265)

Size (1/8th screen,1/4 screen, full screen)

Frame rate (1 to 30 frames per second, 6 default)

The compression quality setting (low, medium, high)

(III) Financial transaction traffic :

Question 2: What type of media is used between the different devices?

ANS: Type of cabling is RJ-45 cabling i.e. straight through cabling.

5
Question 3: What outputs you get from ipconfig command?

ANS:

6
Question 4: Were the ping result successful?

ANS: Yes, it was successful.

Question 5: How many successful packets were received by PC-A?

Four packets were received.

7
Conclusion

In this lab I saw how to built a simple network using hosts and a
switch. I saw the simulation using Cisco Packet Tracer. After cabling
the two PCs to switch, I saw the green dot was flashing for each
connected port, which indicates the connection is active and some
network traffic is flowing between connecting hosts.
