□ Open front cover and remove all other gantry covers and store away from gantry.
□ Remove rear cone mounting brackets.
□ Power down console computers.
□ Shut off all power to gantry and couch at wall box.
□ Loosen Zero gate flag and rotate 90 degrees.
□ Remove two lower curved heat shield plates.
□ Move couch upper subframe back to service position.
□ Add tape between front of base plate and bottom front of tilting box. This prevents
having to "fish-out" screws that may fall under the tilting box.
Rotor Component Removal
For all component removal, store mounting hardware in individual plastic bags and labeled.
Store components in safe place

□ Remove Power Brush blocks. Brush mounting brackets can remain installed.
□ Remove Signal Brush block

11) To prevent the Rotor from moving in any direction when the bearing is removed, the
Rotor must be locked into a stationary position, this done by securing the top and
bottom of the rotor to the stator with metal brackets. (Using lift screw assemblies on
the bottom of the rotor to support the rotor weight.)
Upper bracket (4535 670 08251), position and bolt into place using (3) 1/2-13 x 1.25
hex bolts on the top. Bottom bracket (4535 670 08241), position and bolt into place
using (3) 1/4 –20 x 1” hex bolt with ¼” flat washers. Use (4) ‘C’-clamps to lock rotor to
stator. Two clamps to secure the top of the rotor and (2) clamps to secure the bottom of
the rotor. When clamping the top and bottom brackets tight to the Stator, leave the
mounting bolts loose. There will be gaps between the bracket and rotor, and the bracket
and the stator. Depending on were the gaps are located, Measure the gaps with feeler-
gauges and make shims to fill the gaps. This is to ensure the rotor does not shifted or
pull out of position and remains within allowed amount of movement (.050). (Figure 16)

12) After installing shim spacers, (if needed), tighten bolts and secure clamps.
Check that rotor does not shift or move. If the rotor moves, damage may be done to
the wave- guides. Readjust shims until there is no rotor movement.

PART II: REMOVING THE BEARING AND OR SLIP RING

PREPARE SLIP RING FOR REMOVAL

1) The Slip Ring is mounted to the back of the bearing. When the bearing is removed,
the slip ring is removed along with the bearing. Remove slip ring wiring covers and
brackets.
Cut all tie-raps securing the slip-ring cables to the rotor.
Disconnect cables from power sources and terminal blocks. Disconnect (2) wires
connecting to the FRC unit. Arrange cable so when the bearing and slip-ring is
moved out, the cables are free to move. (Figure 29)

4) In order to prevent possible damage to the optical wave-guide components, dial

indicators are used to read the amount of rotor movement in the ‘Z’ plane.
Mount (2) dial indicator assemblies (dial indicator, magnetic base and flex arm) on rear
side of stator. Set the magnetic base and flex arm on areas of the stator. Adjust the dial
indicator to the surface of the rotor (Figure 32). This will measure the amount of
displacement when the bearing bolts are loosened and the bearing is removed. If the
rotor tilts too much (more than .035”), contact with the wave-guide component could be
made and damage or distortion may occur to the optical wave-guides. The optical wave
guide system will then need to be checked and repaired or replaced. Measure and
record the clearance of the wave-guides before proceeding with bearing loosening and
removal.

7) BEARING REMOVAL
Begin removing Rotor bearing fasteners (outer race) .
Monitor the dial indicator readings during fastener loosening and removal. If there is too
much movement in the dial indicator reading, reattach the bearing and adjust the shims
in the weldment brackets.

8) Once the Rotor bearing fasteners have been removed, loosen and remove Stator
bearing fasteners. Continue to monitor the dial indicators for excessive movement.

9) Carefully pull the bearing and slip ring out away from rotor and stator. The rotor may shift
up once the bearing separates from the stator (jog the couch up or down to loosen the
bearing if the bearing appears to be binding to the rotor or stator). Once the bearing/slip
ring is free, the slip ring will be very close to or resting on the casting. The height will
have to be readjusted otherwise the slip ring could be damaged.

Part III: PREPARATION AND INSTALLING NEW BEARING (reverse dismantling

procedure)

1) Move new bearing into position and mount bearing to bracket. The inner and outer race
of the bearing is marked ‘TOP’. Mount bearing onto bracket with ‘TOP’ in the 12
O’clock position. Using Isopropyl alcohol, wipe bearing to clean any oil or foreign
particles. Check surface of bearing for nicks, burrs, or sharp edges that may cause a
clearance issue. (file or sand as needed ) Inspect surface of rotor and stator for nicks
and burrs, correct as necessary.

2) REMOUNT SLIP RING AND INDICATE SLIP RING

Mount the Slip Ring (new or existing) to the bearing. Locate the 12 O’clock position of
the Slip ring and line it up with the ‘TOP’ indicator of the bearing. Hand tighten mounting
SHCS. The sip-ring will have to be indicated to bearing before mounting them to the
rotor and stator. Set up the dial indicator to indicate slip ring O.D. Mount the magnetic
base to the inner race. Rotate the outer race with slip ring. (Figure 32) Check and adjust
slip ring until runout is less than 0.010 in. Loctite (425) and tighten the SHCS to 11 ft-lbs
after slip ring is indicated.

3) REINSTALL BEARING/SLIP RING TO ROTOR AND STATOR

Slide bearing and slip ring into a position to mate with rotor and stator. Feed cable thru
to back of rotor and dress cables to their terminal locations. Route cable to approximate
original position. Align bolt holes in bearing with threaded holes in rotor and stator. (Jog
couch up and down for mating operation.) Use tilt screws on support bracket to adjust
bearing if a significant gap is shown on bottom mating surface. Apply Loctite (242) and
install SHCS into bearing starting at 6 o’clock position and work around.

Note: Use new SHCS hardware, (1¼” SHCS on Rotor side, 2” SHCS on Stator side)
Hand tighten and snug up with wrench.

Note: When the bearing is fitted into the rotor and stator and the bearing appears to be
a “loose fit” (bearing can be moved or shifted , the bearing will needed to be “indicated”.
If the bearing is a nice snug tight fit, bearing “indication” may not be necessary.
4) BEARING “INDICATION”
Document code Rev: 4535 673 20641, Rev C Page 40 of 44

(Only necessary if bearing was loose fit into castings)

The rotor has to be rotated to “indicate” the bearing. Counter Weights have to be
mounted to the rotor to compensate for the missing weight of the DMS (replaces DMS
weight) (Figure 54). Add 20 to 22 counterweights (p/n86860) into the DMS cavity to set
up a balanced rotor. Two Dial Indicator are used to indicate the bearing variance. Attach
the magnetic bases and flex arms to the bearing outer race (Figure 33). Set the needle if
the dial indicator to the machined surface of the stator. Rotate the rotor clockwise and
take readings all the way around. If the reading is less than .010”, the bearing is properly
seated and is correct. If the reading is greater than .010”, then the rotor has to be
adjusted to the stator to bring into .010” reading. Loosen the bolt to the stator and adjust
the bearing and rotor with the lifting assembly. When readings are within .010’, tighten
stator side to 23 ft lbs bolts and remove dial indicators.
