Module-1
1 a) Explain the characteristics of Shock waves. 06
b) Discuss the underdamped, critical damped and overdamped 06
oscillations with model graph.
c) A 20 gm oscillator with natural angular frequency 10 rad/sec is 04
vibrating in damping medium. The damping force is proportional to
the velocity of the vibrator, if the damping coefficient is 0.17, how
does the oscillations decay?
OR

b) With neat sketch, explain the working of Reddy shock tube. 06
c) The distance between the two pressure sensors in shock tube is 04
100mm. The time taken by a shock wave to travel this distance is
10μs. If the velocity of sound is 340m/s, find the Mach number of
the shock wave.
Module-2
3 a) Explain the stress strain graph and significance of the strain 06
hardening and softening region.
b) Derive the relation between n, Y and σ which have their usual 06
meaning.
c) In a stretching experiment, the extension produced in a wire for a 04
load of 1.5kg is 2mm. the length of the wire is 2m and its radius is
130μm. Find the Young’s modulus of the material of the wire.

OR
4 a) Discuss the factors that leads to the failure of engineering 06
materials.
b) Obtain the expression for bending moment for a beam. 06

c) A solid Lead sphere of radius 10.3m is subjected to a normal 04

pressure of 10 N/m2 acting all over the surface. Determine the
change in its volume.
Module-3
5 a) Explain the construction and working of Thermoelectric generators. 10
b) Obtain the thermo emf in terms of T1 and T2. 06
OR

c) Explain the Platinum Resistance Thermometer. 04
Module-5
9 a) Explain the construction and working of X-Ray photoelectron 08
Spectrometer and its applications.
b) Using the spectra /data obtained from XRD analysis, how the 02
crystallite size can be determined and plot the XRD graph of
crystalline and amorphous material.
