1. Introduction
Light appears white, but it is actually a mixture of different colors (wavelengths). Using a
DIY spectroscope, we can split light into its components and observe the spectrum emitted
by different sources.

2. Aim of the Project

To build a simple spectroscope using household materials and observe the light spectra
from various light sources such as sunlight, LEDs, and tube lights.
3. Materials Required

- An old CD or DVD
- Cardboard tube (from paper towels or toilet roll)
- Black tape or paper
- Scissors or cutter
- Glue or tape
- A light source (bulb, sunlight, LED, etc.)

4. Principle & Concepts

- Diffraction: The CD acts as a diffraction grating to split light into its spectrum.
- Photon Energy: Different colors represent different photon energies.
- Spectrum: The range of colors (wavelengths) seen when light is split.
5. Construction Steps

Steps to Build the Spectroscope:

1. Gather Materials: CD, cardboard tube, scissors, black tape.
2. Cut Slit in Tube: Use black tape to make a thin slit at one end of the tube.
3. Attach CD: Carefully fix the CD at an angle inside the opposite end of the tube using glue
or tape.
4. Observe: Look through the slit towards a light source and observe the spectrum on the
CD.

6. Observations
Light Source Colors Observed in Sketch of Spectrum
Spectrum

Sunlight

LED

Tube Light

7. Analysis & Discussion

- Compare the spectra of different light sources.

- Discuss why some light sources show discrete lines while others show a continuous
spectrum.
- Relate the colors seen to the energy of photons.

8. Conclusion
Summarize the working of the spectroscope and what was learned about light and its
components through this activity.

9. Viva Questions

1. What is a spectroscope used for?

2. What principle is used in a CD to split light?
3. Why do different light sources produce different spectra?
4. What is the relationship between color and photon energy?
