1. Define marginalisation
Ans: When a group of people or communities are excluded from the
majority because of their language, customs, or religion, it is called
Marginalisation .
2. Name the communities that have faced marginalisation in India
Ans: the community that help faced marginalisation in India are SC, ST
OBC ,minorities and women.
3. Who were considered polluting and why ?
Ans: The lower castes were considered as ‘polluting and were treated
as untouchables because of the nature of their jobs.

Ans: tribal people are known as adivasis

1. Who did the caste system benifet ?
Ans: In the ancient time, caste system weed made to provide benefits
to the society. These benefits were : -
(i) Better understanding in relationship the people who were grouped
together in a caste were of the same background.
(ii) Thus they could easily understand each other’s problems and
perspectives and work properly
2. How were the women in the Indian society marginalised ?
Ans: The women, like the shudras, were denied access to education
and subjected to humiliation Freedom of choice in matters of
marriage or finance was denied to women.
The widows were
considered outcasts who were not allowed to participate in the family
or social functions. The continuous denial of rights to women, lack of
education and creation of superstitions to reinforce their low social
status kept the women in shackles for centuries.
3. Why were the tribal communities marginalised ?
Ans: Lacking education socially acceptable mannerisms, they were
considered a misfit in the society and, hence, and were pushed
towards the lower end of the social order. They were employed as
cheap labour in plantations, at construction sites or in local industries.
Thus, they came to be socially and economically exploited.
4. How do you think marginalisation affects the physical and mental
well-being of the marginalised groups ?
Ans: Marginalisation threatens not only the physical but also the
mental well being t of those affected by it as these groups of people
face constant dominance by others. Their self-esteem is diluted and
they consider themselves as inferior to others. To correct the wrong
done to them, the Indian Constitution took some bold initiatives that
are discussed in the next chapter.

1. What role did education play in upholding the caste system? How
can it be used to destroy the evils of caste system?
Ans: English was made available to elite Sections of society, it
replaces the pathshalas of that time which facilitated the students of
lower sections as well. It helped in the shedding of evils of castes
system by propagating the principles and values of liberty ,freedom,
equality and fraternity.
2. Bring out the social and economic inequalities brought about
marginalisation.
Ans: SOCIAL INEQUALITY
the social inequalities can be seen in these forms :-
Education: centuries of denial to education has resulted in large-
scale literacy amongst the marginalised sections which does not
help in uplifting their status.
Lack of choices: The marginalized people, such as the scheduled
castes word denied the freedom in their professions.
Access to healthcare : marginalised groups rarely have access to
the health care system. Poverty illiteracy makes them vulnerable
to severe health problems.
ECONOMIC INEQUALITIES
the social inequalities translate into economic inequalities.
Poverty: the low social status of scheduled castes and scheduled
Tribes are subjected them to high poverty ,illiteracy ,malnutrition
and landlessness.
Lack of economic opportunities: The marginalised sections, such as
the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and women, lacked equal
job opportunities due to their low social status.
