Exp 3 - Simple Pendulum

The experiment aims to plot the L-T² graph of a simple pendulum to demonstrate that it is a straight line. Using a setup with a clamp, thread, bob, and timing device, the time for 10 oscillations is measured for various lengths of the pendulum. The results confirm that L/T² is a constant, validating the theoretical relationship between length and time period.

Experiment : 3

Using a simple pendulum, plot its L-T2 graph and show that the graph is a straight line
Aim
Using a simple pendulum, plot its L-T2 graph.

Apparatus A clamp with stand, a split cork, thread, bob, stop clock/watch, metre scale and a piece of chalk.

Theory
The time period is given by the formula,

l
T=2ᴨ√ or T2 = 4ᴨ2l / g or l = gT2 / 4ᴨ2
g
We can draw a graph between length and time, showing it as a straight line

Procedure

1. Take a cotton thread about 2 metres long and tie its one end with the hook.
2. Pass the thread through the two split parts of a cork with the thread coming out just from 30 cm
mark.
3. Push the bob gently and count the time for 10 oscillations. Repeat for one more time.
4. Change the length to 40 cm and repeat the steps. Again for 50 cm do the same.
5. Record all the observations as given ahead.

For each length, find time period and square it. Calculate L/T2 and show the it is a consistent value.

Plot a graph between l and T2 with l along X- axis and T2 along Y-axis. The graph comes to be a straight
line.

Result: Time period was measured for different lengths and L/T2 graph was drawn. It was found to be a
straight line and the L/T2 was found to be a constant.
Precautions

1. Thread should be strong, weightless and in extensible.

2. The bob should move along a straight line.
3. The bob should not spin during vibration.

Sources of error

1. The string may not be weightless and in extensible.

2. The bob may spin.
3. There may be an error in counting.
