Class-8 Unit - 1

The document provides an overview of operating systems, defining them as essential software for managing computing devices and facilitating user interaction through graphical user interfaces (GUIs). It outlines the differences between GUIs and character user interfaces (CUIs), explains the booting process, and distinguishes between interactive and batch processing. Additionally, it lists various types of operating systems, including mobile and personal computer OSs, and details the functions of an operating system such as instruction, input/output management, memory management, and file management.

Unit-I
Answer the following question
Date:- 11/05/2022
1. What is an operating system?

An operating system is a software programme required to manage and operate a computing device like
smartphones, tablets, computers, supercomputers, web servers, cars, network towers, smart watches, etc.
It is the operating system that eliminates the need to know coding language to interact with computing
devices. It is a layer of graphical user interface (GUI), which acts as a platform between the user and the
computer hardware. Moreover, the operating system manages the software side of a computer and
controls programs execution.

2. Write the name of any two operating system each for personal computer and mobile phone.

The most well-known mobile OSs are Android, iOS, Windows phone OS, and Symbian.
The three most common operating systems for personal computers are Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux.

3. Different Between CUI And GUI Operating System.

GUI: GUI stands for Graphical User Interface. This is a type of user interface
where user interacts with the computer using graphics. Graphics include icons, navigation bars, images etc. Mouse
can be used while using this interface to interact with the graphics. It is a very user-friendly interface and requires no
expertise. Eg: Windows has GUI.

CUI: CUI stands for Character User Interface. This is a type of user interface
where user interacts with computer using only keyboard. To perform any action a command is required. CUI is
precursor of GUI and was used in most primitive computers. Most modern computers use GUI and not CUI. Eg: MS-
DOS has CUI.

4. What is meant by booting the computer system?

Booting a computer today means turning it on or selecting Restart. In the early days of computing,
booting required pressing several buttons at the console. Put Your Boots On! The term comes from
"bootstrap." Since bootstraps help you get your boots on, booting the computer helps it get its first
instructions

5. What is the difference between interactive and batch processing?

Interactive processing means that the person needs to provide the computer with instructions whilst it is doing the
processing. For example, imagine that a computer is running a program that takes a set of files from one directory
and does some work on each one.

Put simply, batch processing is the process, by which a computer completes batches of jobs, often simultaneously, in
non-stop, sequential order. It's also a command that ensures large jobs are computed in small parts for efficiency
during the debugging process.
6. What is the function of operating system?

An operating system is a program that acts as a user-computer GUI (Graphical user interface). It controls the
execution of all types of applications.

The operating system performs the following functions in a device.

1. Instruction
2. Input/output Management
3. Memory Management
4. File Management

Instruction: The operating system establishes a mutual understanding between the various instructions given by the
user.

Input/output Management: What output will come from the input given by the user, the operating system runs this
program. This management involves coordinating various input and output devices. It assigns the functions of those
devices where one or more applications are executed.

Memory Management: The operating system handles the responsibility of storing any data, system programs, and
user programs in memory. This function of the operating system is called memory management.

File Management: The operating system is helpful in making changes in the stored files and in replacing them. It also
plays an important role in transferring various files to a device.

7. What Are The Different Types Of Operating System?

1. Batch operating systems. The batch operating system does not have a direct link with the computer.
2. Time-sharing or multitasking operating systems.
3. Distributed operating systems.
4. Network operating systems.
5. Real-time operating systems.
6. Mobile operating systems.
7. Microsoft Windows.
8. Apple iOS.
